Allen Americans News Release
Allen, Texas - The Allen Americans, ECHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, beat the Kansas City Mavericks on Friday night 3-2 at Allen Event Center to end their losing skid at three games.
The Americans improved to 25-5-1 when scoring the first goal. Spencer Asuchak tipped home an Eric Roy shot from in front of the net for his 12th of the season to put the Americans up 1-0. The goal was originally credited to Roy, but changed later to Asuchak. Alex Guptill added his team-leading 27th of the season later on in the first, at 19:13 to give the Americans a 2-0 cushion. The period would end with Allen up by that exact score with Kansas City outshooting Allen 12 to 9.
The Americans had the only goal of the second period, when JC Campagna walked around Kansas City defenseman Tyler Elbrecht for his 12th of the season, and fourth since coming to Allen. Joel Chouinard and Casey Pierro-Zabotel had the assists. That was Pierro-Zabotel's 499th career point. Kansas City started their comeback by cutting the lead to 3-1. Shawn Pauly scored his 22nd at 17:23 of the second period, from Tyler Elbrecht and Matt Robertson. Each team had 11 shots in the second frame.
The score remained 3-1 until 17:41 of the third period, when CJ Eick deflected home an Alex Brooks shot for his second of the season to cut the lead to 3-2. The Mavericks continued to put pressure on late in the third period, but Jeremy Brodeur continued to make big save after big save and Allen held on for the one-goal victory.
The Americans and Mavericks resume their two-game set tomorrow night at 7:05 pm on Ludwig Night at Allen Event Center. Trevor, Tyler and Craig Ludwig will be honored by the Americans for their outstanding accomplishments and contributions to hockey in the Metroplex.
They Said It -JC Campagna
Question: You guys came out with more speed and physicality compared to Wednesday night's game. Was that the main game plan for tonight?
Campagna: Yeah, this was a do or die game for us. Obviously, we're in the hunt for a playoff spot and every point is crucial right now. So, we had a sense of urgency coming out. We came out hot...had a little break down at the end giving up that second goal, but glad to get the win. Two points is huge for us at this point in the season.
Question: Going off of that, you guys are back in 4th place again in the Mountain Division with a win tonight and a Tulsa loss. What do you guys need to do to continue this streak to make sure you get into the playoffs?
Campagna: I think we just gotta keep playing hard and bring the same intensity every night. I didn't think we had our best performance last game, but I think we responded well tonight. We have another big game against these guys tomorrow night, so tomorrow is just as important.
Question: You personally have had a good streak since arriving here in Allen, with 7 points in 7 games. How was it getting acclimated with the team? And what has been working well for you thus far?
Campagna: It's been great. I'm happy with my play here and I'm happy to be playing with good players. Zabotel is a fantastic player and I am lucky to be playing with him right now. I'm happy with my points, but at the end of the day it's all about winning and if I can help the team win, then it's good enough for me.
