Asheville Tourists News Release
Charleston, WV--In the final road contest of 2013, the Asheville Tourists departed West Virginia with a sweet 4-3 victory over the playoff bound Power. Asheville held on to their one run advantage, but never really seemed in trouble as the bullpen closed out the evening affair.
Asheville used a four-run second inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Ben Waldrip began a string of five straight base hits with a double down the third base line. Jose Briceno then singled to right and Waldrip scored on Francisco Diaz's throwing error. Jason Stolz brought home Briceno with a double to shallow left and Zach Osborne plated Stolz with a single to right. The next batter, Juan Ciriaco, doubled over Jonathan Schwind's head in left and Osborne crossed the plate with ease. All of the damage came with two outs off West Virginia's starter Kyle Haynes.
The Tourists were only able to garner two hits the rest of the way but the pitching took over.
Matt Flemer ran into trouble in the bottom of the third, but the former California Golden Bear battled out of the jam; limiting the damage to just one run. In the bottom of the sixth, the Power put two batters aboard after a double and a strike-out passed ball. Trent Blank came in to relieve Flemer and surrendered a double to Raul Fortunato. Both runners came in to score.
Blank immediately bounced back, retiring the next eight Power hitters. Raul Fernandez came in to work the ninth and made quick work of the first two West Virginia hitters by striking them both out. With the Power's last hope resting on Diaz's shoulders, the catcher managed a weak pop up to Stolz at third. The final out was recorded and the Tourists notched the hard fought victory. Flemer improved to 4-4 while pitching in his last start of the season.
With the win, Asheville earned the season series nod over West Virginia, going 8-7 against the Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate. Up next for the Tourists is a four-game set at home versus the Augusta GreenJackets. Game One is set for Friday evening at 7:05pm.
