THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia bumped the magic number down to one after a 7-1 victory over the Asheville Tourists Wednesday evening at Appalachian Power Park. The Power struck first by collecting three runs in the second inning. Jimmy Rider hit a two-run double and scored when Max Moroff hit a double off the left field wall one batter later. Jordan Steranka gave West Virginia a 4-0 lead after a solo shot to lead off the fourth inning and the Power capped their scoring after Walker Gourley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Jon Schwind hit a two-RBI single. Luis Heredia earned his sixth win after tossing five shutout innings in the win.
ONE TO GO: A victory by the Power or a loss by the Hickory Crawdads tonight will give West Virginia their first playoff berth since 2008. The Crawdads lost the first two games of their series against Greensboro and are five back in the division with five games to go. West Virginia last clinched a playoff berth on this day five years ago after Curt Rindal hit a bases loaded two-RBI single in the bottom of the ninth victory in an 8-7 against Kannapolis.
GLASNOW AND BELL HONORED: In a league poll of the 14 South Atlantic League team's field managers, general managers, sportswriters, and broadcasters, Power teammates Josh Bell and Tyler Glasnow were selected today to the 2013 Annual All-Star Team. Bell was selected as one of the top outfielders and is batting .281 with 37 doubles in 117 games. Glasnow was chosen at the top right-handed pitcher and currently leads the league with 160 strikeouts in 106.1 innings. Both Glasnow and Bell were selected to participate in the mid-season All-Star Game but did not play.
LOOKING AHEAD: Thursday's series finale between West Virginia and Asheville is the final home game of the 2013 regular season at Appalachian Power Park. After the Power and Tourists finish their game, the Power will play four games on the road in Lexington to end the regular season. Should West Virginia make the postseason, the first game will be played Wednesday, September 4th at Appalachian Power Park against the Hagerstown Suns.
START YOUR ENGINES: West Virginia starting pitchers continue to excel in the second half, combining for a 22-13 record and a 2.44 ERA compared to a first half ERA of 3.68. Headlining the starting pitching in this half are the trio of Tyler Glasnow, Jason Creasy, and Kyle Haynes, who have combined for a 1.80 ERA.
RIDER-MANIA: Jimmy Rider has hit safely in three consecutive games and collected seven hits in his last ten at-bats. In the last three games, Rider has six RBI's including a two-RBI double in Wednesday's win over Asheville. The Pittsburgh native was selected in the 26th round by the Pirates and is slugging .571 in nine games with the Power.
HIGH MARKS: Josh Bell has 37 doubles this season and is three doubles away from tying Dan Gamache's 2012 club record of 40. Walker Gourley's 34 stolen bases ranks eighth in club history, tied with Lee Haydel from the 2008 club and Lorenzo Cain from the 2006 team. The all-time stolen base leader in Power history is Darren Ford, who stole 69 bases in the 2006 season. Jhondaniel Medina earned his 12th save of the season Tuesday and is three away from tying Nathan Kilcrease's record set last season.
