Fresno Falcons News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. â Mike Mathers, Drew Schoneck and Jason Weaver all scored as the Fresno Falcons defeated the Bakersfield Condors, 3-1, on Tuesday at Centennial Garden, snapping a seven-game winless streak overall and marking the club's first win on the road since Nov. 11.
The Condors lit the lamp first when Denis Ladouceur's wrist shot from the top of the left circle deflected off a body in front and eluded the glove of Fresno goaltender Mike Brusseau at 13:49 of the opening period. Fresno received a break of its own, though, after Mike Mathers knocked in his second of the season when a crazy carom out of the corner ended up right on his stick in the slot at 17:24 with his club on the power play. Mathers also set a new team record tonight by playing in his 362nd game as a Falcon, breaking the mark for most games played in a Fresno uniform previously held by head coach Greg Spenrath.
The Falcons broke the 1-1 stalemate in the second period when Drew Schoneck one-timed a feed from Boris Protsenko at 8:44, giving the club its first even strength goal in more than four full hockey games. They added to their lead at 16:11 of the second after Jason Weaver broke up a play just inside his own blue-line, took off to the races and then hammered a slapshot past Bakersfield goaltender Shane Bendera for a short-handed goal.
Fresno never needed Weaver's added bit of insurance as Brusseau held the fort over the final 20 minutes to pick-up his first victory as a Falcon. The win was the team's first since Jan. 16 and brings their record to 12-27-5.
The Falcons next take the ice tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Save Mart Center when they host the Northern Division's Trenton Titans. Tickets for the game are still available for as little as $8 and can be purchased at the Save Mart Center box office, all Ticketmaster outlets, which include select Save Mart Supermarkets, Tower Records, Wherehouse Music and Ritmo Latino locations, charged by phone at 485-TIXS or bought online by clicking the Ticketmaster icon throughout www.fresnofalcons.com.
