Pederson Named Sher-Wood ECHL Player of the Month
February 4, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO â San Diego Gulls left-winger Mark Pederson has been named the Sher-Wood ECHL Player of the Month for January.
Pederson led the ECHL in January with 16 goals and five game-winning goals and tied for the league lead with 26 points in 16 games. The Pacific Division leading Gulls went 13-2-1 in January and are in the midst of an ECHL-high nine-game winning streak and an 11-game home winning streak, also a league high.
Pederson, who had four two-goal games, eight multipoint games and was a +7 during the month, scored a point in each of his 16 games (16g, 10a) in January, extending his ECHL season-high scoring streak to 18 games. He has 30 points (19g, 11a) during that streak, which began Dec. 28.
The former No. 1 pick of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens ended January leading the ECHL in goals (30), power-play goals (13) and shooting percentage (26.1). He ranks second in game-winning goals (6) and is 10th in overall scoring with 51 points (30g, 21a). Pederson set a franchise record with a nine-game goal-scoring streak (12g) from Dec. 28 to Jan. 17, tying the ECHL season high set by Florida's Keith Anderson.
This is Pederson's second season with the Gulls. He came to San Diego after spending the previous seven years playing in Europe. In 2002-03 Pederson was named as the West Coast Hockey's League Forward of the Year and Playoff MVP. He was also selected to the All-WCHL team.
In 60 games played last season, the 6-foot-2-inch, 196-pound native of Prelate, Saskatchewan led the Gulls with 39 goals and 72 points, ranking him third and seventh respectively in the WCHL. Pederson was also first in the WCHL in game-winning goals (8), first in hat tricks (4) and second in power-play goals (16).
During his 16-year career, Pederson has led his team in points and goals five different seasons. The veteran left-winger was a first round selection (15th pick overall) of the Montreal Canadiens in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft. Pederson played parts of five seasons in the NHL with Montreal, Philadelphia, San Jose and Detroit.
