
Johnstown's Currie named CCM ECHL Rookie of the Month

PRINCETON, N.J. - Johnstown Chiefs goaltender David Currie is the CCM ECHL Rookie of the Month for January.
In his first professional season, the 21-year-old Currie was 7-0-1 in January as Johnstown went 7-4-2 for a 24-15-5 record with 53 points and fourth place in the Northern Division.
The 5-10 and 175-pound Currie won his first six starts of the month while
lowering his goals against average from 4.02 to 3.00 and raising his save
percentage from .866 to .900. He made 20 saves in a 4-2 win at Trenton on
January 7 and had 24 saves in a 4-2 win against Cincinnati on January 9.
He recorded his first professional shutout on January 10 making 25 saves
in a 2-0 win against Reading, and made a season-high 44 saves in a 3-2 win
at Peoria on January 16. He made 40 saves in a 4-2 win against Reading on
January 24 and had 29 saves in a 4-2 win at Toledo on January 25. A 3-2
shootout loss against Atlantic City on January 30 ended the winning streak
as Currie made 30 saves in regulation, two saves in overtime and stopped
three of four shooters in the shootout. He ended the month making 35 saves
in a 5-2 win against Reading.
Currie, who attended training camp with Cleveland of the American Hockey
League before joining the Chiefs, is 9-5-1 with a shutout, a 2.85 goals
against average and a .907 save percentage in 17 games with Johnstown.
He played four seasons with Peterborough of the Ontario Hockey League
beginning in 1999-2000 when he appeared in two games. He was 5-9-1 in 17
games in 2000-01 and 27-23-4 in 57 regular season games in 2001-02 while
also appearing in six playoff games. He closed out his junior career in
2002-03 going 24-15-7 with a 2.89 goals against average and a .915 save
percentage in 52 regular season games while also appearing in seven playoff
games.
