April 1, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Apr. 1, 2011) - Cam Atkinson's first professional goal with 4:52 left in regulation completed a third-period comeback as the Springfield Falcons rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat the Sound Tigers 3-2 at the MassMutual Center in Springfield on Friday night. With the win, the Falcons improve to 32-38-2-3. The loss snaps the Sound Tigers four-game road winning streak as they fall to 26-38-4-7.
Springfield controlled much of the first 20 minutes of the game but was unable to break through on the scoreboard. The Falcons were awarded three power-play opportunities in the first period, but Nathan Lawson had timely saves throughout the period and stopped all 12 shots he saw as the Sound Tigers and Falcons went to the dressing rooms scoreless after the opening frame.
Just 36 seconds into the second period, the Sound Tigers took the lead. Rhett Rakhshani, who was named to the AHL All-Rookie Team earlier in the week, entered the Falcons zone and passed the puck to a streaking Jeremy Colliton. Colliton fired the puck over Allen York's right shoulder into the top of the net for his 16th goal of the season and the Sound Tigers led 1-0. They increased their lead to two at 10:06 of the middle frame. Justin DiBenedetto positioned himself in front of York on the power play and deflected Brett Motherwell's point shot into the back of the net. It marked DiBenedetto's 18th goal of the season and the Sound Tigers carried their 2-0 lead to the third period.
However, Springfield cut their two-goal deficit in half just 10 seconds into the third period. Rob Hisey's delay of game penalty carried to the third period and Nikita Filatov beat Nathan Lawson from the slot to make the score 2-1. Art Bidlevskii was given a delay of game penalty at 4:24 which led to Ben Guite putting a rebound past Lawson at 4:48 of the third to tie the game at two. With 4:52 left in regulation, Atkinson completed the comeback as his backhander trickled past Lawson and over the goal line for the Greenwich, Conn. native's first professional goal. The Sound Tigers had great chances with their net empty in the final minute but couldn't find the equalizer as the Falcons came away with the 3-2 win.
The Sound Tigers return to action tomorrow night when they make their only visit to the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday night to face the Binghamton Senators at 7 p.m.
