Devils Undone By Phantoms

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. - The Time Warner Cable Cup will be decided during the final game on Tuesday thanks to a 9-5 victory by the Adirondack Phantoms against the Albany Devils Friday night at the Glen Falls Civic Center. The Devils now own a 6-4-0-1 record against their Northway rival.
For the season, Albany is 31-38-1-4, while Adirondack improves to 27-37-4-6.
The outing was setting up to be a back-and-forth matchup with the Devils owning two leads in the first period, but the Phantoms led at the break 3-2. Albany hit three posts during the first 21 minutes, including Ryan Ginand striking iron moments before Mike Testwuide made it 4-2 only 40 seconds into the second.
The goal appeared to be the game changer as Adirondack followed with four-straight tallies during the next eight minutes. Matt Read scored at 6:02 and Cullen Eddy followed at 6:43. The team's leading scorer, Denis Hamel, then made it 7-2 at 8:38 of the second.
Mike Hoeffel scored his first-career goal to open the scoring at 4:36 of the first period. Fellow newbie Joe Sova sent a shot from the point that was tipped on goal by Alexander Vasyunov. Hoeffel was there to stuff in the rebound.
Testwuide evened things at 5:43, but Ginand netted a shorthanded goal - the team's 12th of the season - at 11:04. Ginand blocked a shot in the defensive end, creating an odd-man rush. In the offensive zone, Chris Murray sent an attempt towards the crease where Ginand tipped it home. It appeared Darcy Zajac had tipped the puck before crossing the goal line, but the officials awarded the tally to Ginand - his third of the season.
From there the Phantoms exploded for seven unanswered goals and Testwuide concluded his hat trick at 14:48 of the season period. Nathan Perkovich stopped the run at 18:49 of the second with his eighth tally of the season, which was the team's second power-play goal of the night.
The Devils started to chip away at the lead; Adam Henrique scored on a penalty shot at 3:40 of the third and Vasyunov made it 9-5 by splitting the defense at 5:24.
In the end, Albany had hit three posts and had two goals disallowed.
The Devils will look to rebound on Saturday as the Charlotte Checkers come to the Times Union Center for a 7 p.m. contest. The team will be thanking fans with "Fan Appreciation Night." There will be more than 40 different prizes up for grabs and the first 2,000 fans will receive an Albany Devils player bobblehead.
