Bridgeport Islanders News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 24, 2012) - Falcons forward Maksim Mayorov fired off the inside of the right post and past Anders Nilsson in the sixth round of the shootout, while Sound Tigers forward Kael Mouillierat fired off the left post and away from the net in the bottom half of the sixth round as Springfield defeated Bridgeport 2-1 at the MassMutual Center on Friday night. With the win, Springfield improves to 25-25-2-2. The Sound Tigers earn a point in the shootout loss as their record moves to 28-18-3-3.
Each side posted 10 shots in the opening period, but Nilsson and Springfield netminder Paul Dainton were perfect in the first 20 minutes. The Falcons had the best scoring opportunity when Maksim Mayorov was awarded a penalty shot after being hooked on a shorthanded breakaway attempt by Matt Donovan. However, Nilsson spread out as Mayorov skated in and the Springfield forward fired wide as the game stayed scoreless.
Sound Tigers forward Blair Riley gave the Sound Tigers a 1-0 lead midway through the second period. Riley fed Trevor Frischmon on a 2-on-1 into the Springfield zone and Frischmon's initial shot was stopped. However, Riley backhanded the rebound past Dainton for his second goal in as many games to put the Sound Tigers ahead 1-0. The Falcons nearly tied the score late in the frame as Cody Goloubef beat Anders Nilsson over his left shoulder. However, the puck hit the crossbar and came down outside of the net, and the score remained 1-0 heading to the third period.
However, the Falcons tied the game midway through the period. The Sound Tigers turned the puck over at their own blue line and Adam Mair made them pay, as he picked off a pass and fired from the slot past Nilsson to even the score with 10:36 left in the final period. Justin DiBenedetto nearly put the Sound Tigers ahead in the final minute of regulation, but Dainton caught a piece of his shot from the slot as the puck trickled slowly just wide of the left post, and the game went to overtime and eventually the shootout.
Neither side scored in the first three rounds, and Springfield's Tomas Kubalik opened the scoring in the fourth round of the shootout as he beat Nilsson to put Springfield ahead. David Ullstrom answered with a backhander in the bottom half of the round to tie it, but Matt Calvert forced the Sound Tigers hand as he scored to open the fifth frame. With the game on the line, Jon Landry scored to push the shootout to a sixth round, where Mayorov fired off the iron and in, while Mouillierat's attempt clanged off the iron and away from the net.
Nilsson made 35 saves in the shootout loss, while Dainton made 26 saves.
The Sound Tigers return to Webster Bank Arena tomorrow evening for a contest against the Providence Bruins at 7:00 p.m.
