Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - Although the Norfolk Admirals tied up Friday night's game with under two minutes remaining, Hartford's Ryan Haggerty's overtime tally handed the Admirals a 3-2 loss at Scope Arena.

Despite outshooting Hartford 11-8 in the first period, the scoreboard didn't reflect that for Norfolk, and the Wolf Pack opened up the game at 10:55 of the first period. Right winger Danny Kristo accepted the puck from Chris Mueller, stood and fired it from the left hashmarks. The wrist shot fooled Norfolk goaltender Jason LaBarbera, sending the Admirals into a 1-0 hole.

With just under three minutes to go in the period, Hartford extended their lead . Ryan Bourque skated up with Haggerty on a 2-on-1, and whistled one by LaBarbera far side. Haggerty and Tyler Brown got the helpers at 17:01, and the opening 20 minutes ended up in Hartford's favor, 2-0.

The Admirals did not back down. Captain Dave Steckel skated behind the net with the puck and took residence at the edge of the right circle. Finding a shooting lane, Steckel slapped one on net, which slid between the legs of netminder Yann Danis, who played 11 games for the Admirals earlier this year. Emerson Etem and Brendan Bell provided the assists at 14:25 to trim the Wolf Pack's lead to 2-1.

Late in the third period, Norfolk rallied to tie up the game. In a big scrum in front of the Hartford net, Steckel knocked the puck free to a waiting Etem in the slot. Etem didn't waste the opportunity and snapped the puck over a sprawled Danis to even the game at two. Max Friberg earned the secondary assist at 18:40, and the two teams headed to sudden death overtime.

A win was not in the cards for the home team, however, and at 4:10 of the extra frame, Hartford scored. Defenseman Conor Allen fired a shot on LaBarbera, which the Norfolk goalie stopped, but Haggerty scooped up the rebound and lifted it over LaBarbera's glove. Marek Hrivik got a helper of his own at 4:10, and Hartford skated away with the 3-2 victory.

Danis turned aside 38 of 40 shots, while LaBarbera stopped 30 of 33. Neither team capitalized on the power play, with Hartford going 0-for-4, and Norfolk going 0-for-5.

Norfolk and Hartford rematch tomorrow night at 7:15 p.m. for Pink in the Rink Night.
