
Sharks Win 5th Straight After 5-4 Shootout Victory over Monarchs

Worcester, MA. - The Worcester Sharks (18-14-3-2, 41pts) kicked off their 3-in-3 weekend with a thrilling 5-4 shootout win over the Manchester Monarchs (25-9-3-2, 55pts) for their fifth straight victory in front of 3,122 fans at the DCU Center on Friday night.
Taylor Fedun (1-1-2), Jeremy Langlois (1-2-3), Chris Tierney, and Travis Oleksuk scored goals for Worcester as the Sharks trailed 2-0, 3-2, but led 4-3 before the Monarchs forced overtime. Bryan Lerg scored the only goal in the shootout while Troy Grosenick made 30 saves and stopped all three shooters in the shootout as the Sharks improved to 4-0-0-0 on their five game home stand which ends Saturday night vs. the Penguins at 7pm. Colin Miller (1-2-3), Andrew Crescenzi, Adam Hughesman, and Michael Mersch scored for Manchester while JF Berube made 24 saves in net in the shootout loss.
Manchester struck at the 5:03 mark of the first period when forward Adam Hughesman (1st) scored the first goal of his AHL career after poking the puck past Troy Grosenick in front of the net. The Monarchs added another at 7:26 when Andrew Crescenzi (1st) stole it in front of the crease and found the back of the net, giving the Monarchs the 2-0 advantage. Despite Worcester's 11-7 shot advantage, they trailed 2-0 through twenty minutes.
Worcester got on the board at 11:21 of the second period when Gus Young ripped one from the point that was tipped into the net by Jeremy Langlois (11th) to cut the lead to one. Less than four minutes later, an off-balance Chris Tierney (5th) rocketed a wrist shot past Manchester's netminder Jean-Francois Berube after a solid pass across the left circle from Ryan Carpenter to even the score at 2-2. The Monarchs regained the lead with 54.6 seconds left in the second period when defenseman Colin Miller (10th) beat Grosenick with a quick shot from the left point with traffic in front of the net. Grosenick made 10 saves on 11 shots with the Sharks down 3-2 going into the second intermission.
Five minutes into the third period, Travis Oleksuk (4th) lit up the lamp after ripping one in front of the crease to tie the game. The Sharks took the lead for the first time of the night after Taylor Fedun (2nd) fired a wrist shot in front of the blue line on the power play that got past Berube. Manchester tied it up once again when Michael Mersch (8th) knocked a backhander in the net with 2:18 left in the third period. Worcester outshot Manchester 12-11 in the third period, as they game remained 4-4 at the end of regulation.
No goals were scored during the sudden-death overtime period and the Monarchs and Sharks went to a shootout. Bryan Lerg's goal in the shootout gave the Sharks the 5-4 shootout victory.
The Sharks overall record improves to 18-14-3-2, 41pts, and 12-6-2-1, 275pts at the DCU Center this season.

Petter Emanuelsson (inj), Eriah Hayes (inj), Greger Hanson, and Jimmy Bonneau did not dress for Worcester....Chris Teirney now has a seven game point streak (4-4-8)...Troy Grosenick has won five straight starts.... Micheal Haley picked up his team leading 7th fighting major with a first period scrap with Derek Forbort...it was the final regular season visit by the Monarchs this season.

On Saturday, the Sharks host the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins at 7pm. Doors open at 3:30pm for the 7th annual High School Hockey Clash between the Hudson Hawks and the Marlborough Panthers at 4pm.
On Sunday, the Shark travel to Manchester for a 3pm start vs the Monarchs to close out the four game week!
