Pirates Get Revenge with Shutout Victory

January 16, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release

Justin Hodgman scored the game-winner late in the first period and Eric Selleck and Alexandre Bolduc added singles as the Portland Pirates topped the St. John's IceCaps 3-0 at Mile One Centre on Friday night.

Both starting goaltenders turned in solid performances but it was Portland's Mike McKenna who won the battle with a 32-save shutout. IceCaps' starter Connor Hellebuyck was the busier of the two and stopped 35 of the 37 shots he faced.

The IceCaps found themselves in penalty trouble in the opening period and it came back to haunt them as the Pirates were the first to find the back of the net, doing so with the man advantage. Justin Hodgman located the puck behind the IceCaps' net and caught Hellebuyck looking the other way, changed direction and slid it into the net with just under three minutes left to play in the opening frame.

After a scoreless second frame, the Pirates took control of the game late in the third. Hellebuyck attempted to knock the puck off of Selleck's stick with a pokecheck and missed, allowing Selleck to make a move and score his fifth of the year at 17:41.

Alexandre Bolduc added an empty-netter to lift the Pirates to their first win at Mile One Centre this year.

The IceCaps and Pirates will end their three-game series tomorrow, Saturday, January 17 at Mile One Centre at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the Mile One Centre Box Office, by phone at (709) 576-7657 and online at www.mileoncecentre.com.
