Portland Pirates News Release
St John's, N.L. - The Portland Pirates (22-16-2-0) faced off against the St. John's IceCaps (16-19-5-1) for the second of three times this week at the Mile One Centre in St. John's. The Pirates scored late in the first period, maintaining their lead throughout the contest. Portland goalie Mike McKenna (16-13-2) picked up his fifth shutout of the season, his third in the last month.
The Pirates were able to capitalize on their scoring opportunities throughout the night. Justin Hodgman was able to put Portland on the board first with a power play goal at 17:12 that went on to be the eventual game-winner. Brendan Shinnimin and Jordon Southorn got the helpers on the goal.
Despite lots of good chances on St. John's' net-minder Connor Hellebuyck (16-11-2), the Pirates were scoreless in the second. Meanwhile, the Portland defense kept the IceCaps' scoring opportunities to a minimum.
Eric Selleck potted an unassisted goal at 17:41 in the third period to make the score 2-0. The final goal came late in the third period when the IceCaps pulled Hellebuyck from the crease allowing Bolduc to sail the puck to the back of the net at 18:46.
It was another exceptional night for McKenna, blocking every shot fired his way for a total of 32 saves. Hellebuyck made 35 saves on 37 shots faced.
The two teams will face off once more this weekend. They will play on Saturday, January 17, at the Mile One Center at 6 p.m. Both teams will be looking to move forward in the race for the Port-To-Port Challenge Cup presented by Eimskip. The Pirates will then return home for a game against the Worcester Sharks at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21. They will host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Friday, January 23. Tickets are Buy-One-Get-One-Half-Off when you call 207-PIRATES.
