Hamilton Defeats Grand Rapids with Two Goals from Dumont
January 16, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
Gabriel Dumont's second goal of the night with just over six minutes remaining was enough to lift the Hamilton Bulldogs to a 2-1 victory over the Grand Rapids Griffins Friday night at FirstOntario Centre.
Dumont's winner at 13:57 came just after Brennan Evans turned the puck over to Jacob de la Rose in the neutral zone. De la Rose found Dumont on the right side, who streaked towards Jared Coreau and fired a shot between Coreau's pads for his ninth goal of the campaign.
For the second consecutive game, the Griffins surrendered the first goal of the night while on a penalty kill. Just after the Griffins began killing a penalty assessed to Scott Czarnowczan for holding, Dumont was left open in front of Coreau. After he received a pass from Darren Dietz, he shot the puck under Coreau's left pad as he was falling to his knees at 13:40 of the opening period.
Neither team scored in the middle stanza, but it was Coreau making several key saves to keep the Griffins trialing by a goal entering the third period. Each team had one unsuccessful power play chance in the second period.
Grand Rapids (19-14-3-1) evened the contest in the third period when Mark Zengerle scored his fourth goal of the season. Zengerle skated against the boards on the right side following a pass from captain Jeff Hoggan and fired a wrister inside the top corner on a sharp angle past Bulldogs goaltender Mike Condon at 5:17. Condon had difficulty seeing the puck due to Colin Campbell providing a screen in front of the goal.
Hamilton (17-17-6-0) fired 34 shots on Coreau, who turned away 32. Condon earned his 10th win of the season while facing a season-low 21 shots.
The Griffins failed to score on three power play opportunities. Hamilton came into tonight's game ranked 29th on the power play but did score once on its three chances.
Grand Rapids will return to FirstOntario Centre Saturday for a rematch with Hamilton at 7:00 pm.
