Bridgeport Mounts Comeback, Falls Short to Providence
January 16, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release
PROVIDENCE, R.I. "" Brian Ferlin scored 2:42 into overtime as the Providence Bruins defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 3-2 on Friday night at Dunkin Donuts Center.
Ferlin's seventh of the season ended a five-game losing streak for the Bruins, whose last win came at home to Bridgeport back on January 2.
The Sound Tigers started the game off strong, dominating puck possession in the first 10 minutes. A scoreless first was highlighted by a massive hit from Scooter Vaughan on Steve Eminger, sending Eminger into the Sound Tigers bench. Anthony Camara came in to fight Vaughan, as each received five for fighting.
Much like Bridgeport owned the first, the Bruins took over the second. It looked as if the Bruins would score midway through the period as they had a wide open net to shoot at, but Griffin Reinhart came sliding through the slot to block the shot. A minute later, Kevin Poulin made one of his best saves of the year, stretching while on his stomach to make a toe save on Tyler Randell to keep the game scoreless.
Providence's pressure became too much for Bridgeport soon after, as they got on the board with 11 minutes left in the period. Colin Stuart corralled the puck just below the right circle and fluttered a knuckle puck towards the Sound Tigers net. The shot fooled Poulin and beat him five-hole, giving the Bruins a 1-0 lead. It was Stuart's third of the season and third in as many games.
With the zone time growing for the Bruins, Harry Zolnierczyk sent Providence's Justin Florek hard into the boards. Zolnierczyk received five minutes for boarding and a game misconduct, forcing the Sound Tigers to play with just 11 forwards, but more importantly, put them down a man for nearly the rest of the period.
With two and a half minutes in the major penalty gone, the Bruins took advantage. This time, it was David Warsofsky, walking in from his point position and firing a shot through a screen that snuck through Poulin. Warsofsky's first of the year made it 2-Providence going into the third period.
The Bruins nearly made it 3-0 to start the third, but Poulin made sure to keep them from getting another. The Sound Tigers netminder flashed the glove, getting stick taps from the Bridgeport bench and making sure the deficit stayed at two.
The Sound Tigers finally got on the board 2:50 into the third. Scott Mayfield found Cory Conacher with a long stretch pass to send him on a breakaway. Conacher buried the shot five-hole to make it 2-1 Providence.
Bridgeport kept mounting pressure, as they eventually tied it up later in the period. Mayfield ripped a shot wide, but Kael Mouillierat banked the rebound off Jeremy Smith's pad and in. Mouillierat's third straight game with a goal made it a tie hockey game at 2-2.
That set the stage for Ferlin, who rifled a shot over the shoulder of Poulin to end the game in overtime. Alexander Khokhlachev and Tommy Cross got the assists.
The Bruins went 1-for-3 on the man advantage, while the Sound Tigers did not get one power play. Poulin made 29 saves in a losing effort, while Smith made 23 for the Bruins.
The Sound Tigers come home for a pair of home games tomorrow and Sunday against the Syracuse Crunch. Game time on Saturday is 7:00 p.m., while Sunday is 3:00 p.m.
