SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes defeated the Portland Timbers 3-2 on Wednesday night at PayPal Park. It marked San Jose's first win over Portland since April 6, 2019, snapping a seven-match winless streak in the series (0-5-2). The Quakes are now 5-1-1 in all competitions (3-1-1 in MLS play) under interim head coach Alex Covelo.

Portland got on the board first before San Jose scored two unanswered goals through Jackson Yueill and Jamiro Monteiro to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. The Timbers answered early in the second half, but the Quakes regained the lead on Monteiro's second of the night in the 80th minute.

The Quakes have now scored 22 goals this season, fifth most in MLS, including at least three goals in three of their last five matches and five of their 12 regular season matches to date. San Jose is the only team in MLS with 3+ goals in five separate matches this season.

The Earthquakes will continue their two-match homestand when they host Sporting Kansas City on Sunday, May 22, presented by Adobe. The match will kick off from PayPal Park at 4:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 (English), and 1370 KZSF (Spanish).

GAME NOTES

The Earthquakes currently hold a 3-5-4 record (13 pts.) during the 2022 MLS regular season.

San Jose is now 5-1-1 in all competitions under interim head coach Alex Covelo, including a 3-1-1 record in MLS play.

San Jose is now 6-15-9 all-time vs. Portland in MLS play, including a 6-4-5 record at home.

The Quakes have now scored 22 goals this season, fifth most in MLS, including at least three goals in three of their last five matches and five of their 12 regular season matches to date. San Jose is the only team in MLS with 3+ goals in five separate matches this season.

Nine of San Jose's 13 points so far this season have come from matches in which they conceded the first goal (two wins, three draws).

San Jose has won three consecutive regular season home matches and four consecutive home matches in all competitions.

Midfielder Jackson Yueill scored his second goal of the season and ninth of his MLS career.

Midfielder Jamiro Monteiro scored his second and third goals of the season and 11th and 12th of his MLS career. He has now tallied three goals and an assist in the last two games. Tonight was the first multi-goal game of his MLS career.

Forward Cade Cowell tallied the assist on Monteiro's goal. It marked his fourth assist of the season and 11th of his MLS career. He has now tallied three assists in the last two matches.

Forward Jeremy Ebobisse tallied the assist on Yueill's goal. It marked his first assist of the season and 10th of his MLS career. Ebobisse, formerly of the Timbers, scored 26 goals in 88 appearances for Portland from 2017-21.

Midfielder Chofis was active for the first time since March 12. He missed the past eight matches with an upper thigh injury.

Midfielder Judson was active for the first time since April 2 and entered the match in the 88th minute. He missed the past six matches with a knee injury.

Midfielder Shea Salinas, the team's all-time assist leader, was active for the first time in 2022 after working his way back from lower leg injuries. Salinas entered the match in the 88th minute, marking his first appearance since Oct. 23, 2021.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES INTERIM HEAD COACH ALEX COVELO

On his analysis of tonight's game:

"First of all, we started a little bit slow in the first half. It took us too much time to get into the game and that's why I think Portland took the lead. We were not able to exploit those spaces. Sometimes, we didn't have the right position to our advantages in the middle to break lines or they would never exploit the passes with Marcos [Lopez] or Cade Cowell in the outside. I think it was something to fix in the second half, but other than that, the goal from Jackson Yueill playing in that position, I hear it's his second goal [this season]. Jamiro [Monteiro] scored another two goals. That's the place that he has to play in those positions. I think that the guys did fantastic. They showed a lot of personality again in the second half."

On Jamiro Monteiro's performance tonight:

"Well, Jamiro is a player with a lot of quality and that's why we need him in those areas, to turn and try to combine and be dangerous. It's fun to see him play. At the beginning of the game, he was a little bit defensive, and we were not able to find him in spaces that we wanted. But at the end of the first half and in the second half, he was amazing. That's why he scored those goals."

On his performance tonight and his growing comfort level:

"From my first game, my first training, I was really connecting [with his teammates]. I was talking with the guys. But now I feel like it's getting better and better. Today, I think we could have done more, we could have scored more goals. It didn't happen but we have another game Sunday and I hope we do that on Sunday."

On what's led to the team becoming more dangerous offensively recently:

"Yeah, the coach talks a lot about that. From transition, we need to go forward quickly. That's a positive thing and we're doing well and scoring goals. The negative thing is we're giving up too many easy goals against us. We talk about it, and we try to do it better, so we're really working on that. That needs to be better. Like today, we gave up two goals from corners. I think we need to be sharper in those moments to make it easier for ourselves."
