Early Deficit Sinks Jumbo Shrimp

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Despite a four-run bottom of the sixth, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp couldn't overcome a 10-0 deficit Friday as they ended up falling 11-4 to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in front of 5,169 fans at 121 Financial Ballpark.

Lehigh Valley (12-12) blew the game wide open in the sixth inning against Jacksonville (11-12) reliever Cristian Charle. Viamel Machin reached on a throwing error and stole second, before Jhalilyn Ortiz walked and Jim Haley singled to fill the bases. Esteban Quiroz followed with ground out, scoring Machin from third. Then, three consecutive singles by Dalton Guthrie, Simon Muzziotti and John Hicks scored three more runs for the IronPigs, giving them a 10-0 lead.

The Jumbo Shrimp responded with a four-run sixth inning of their own. Xavier Edwards started with a walk and scored on a triple by Joey Wendle. During Jerar Encarnacion's at-bat, Wendle scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 10-2 . Encarnacion walked before Peyton Burdick scorched a two-run shot, cutting the IronPigs lead down to 10-4.

In the eighth inning, Lehigh Valley tallied another run. Quiroz walked and Muzziotti singled and a wild pitch pushed both runners to second and third. A sacrifice fly from Hicks scored Quiroz, increasing the Lehigh Valley lead to 11-4.

Lehigh Valley drew first blood in the top of the second. Jordan Qsar (5) blasted a solo shot off Jumbo Shrimp starter Chi Chi González (2-2).

The IronPigs tagged González for three more runs in the third with a three-run shot off the bat of Muzziotti (1), pushing their lead to four.

Lehigh Valley continued to pad their lead in the fourth. This time, a two-run home run by Jhailin Ortiz (2) increased the lead to 6-0.

Jacksonville and Lehigh Valley continue their series Saturday at 6:35 p.m. RHP Jeff Lingren (0-0, 7.20) starts for the Jumbo Shrimp against the IronPigs RHP T.J. Zeuch (1-1, 5.68). Coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. on Bally Live, MiLB.tv, ESPN 690 and espn690.com.
