Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - Bulls right-hander Anthony Molina tossed five scoreless innings, while shortstop Tristan Gray clubbed two hits and scored the game-winning run when first baseman Johan Lopez reached on an error in the ninth inning as Durham walked off with a 2-1 victory over the Nashville Sounds in front of an announced crowd of 8,892 on Friday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Bulls would strike first in the third courtesy of 3B Curtis Mead's run-scoring single to right. That 1-0 advantage would remain until the eighth, when the Sounds evened the score, setting up the ninth-inning heroics. Gray would smash a leadoff single to right, move to second on a wild pitch and third on a groundout before coming home when Lopez reached on a wild throw to end the contest and give Durham the victory.
Gray (2-3, 1 R, 1 BB) was the lone Bulls batter to record a multi-hit effort. The win ensures Durham remains tied at the top in the International League Second Half standings with twenty regular season games remaining.
Neither Molina (5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 SO) nor Sounds starter Robert Gasser (6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 8 SO) factored in the final decisions despite strong outings. Durham righty Trevor Brigden (2.0 IP, 2 BB, 1 SO) followed Molina with two shutout innings of his own, while Bulls reliever Trevor Kelley (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 SO) earned the victory. Nashville southpaw Fernando Abad (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 SO) suffered the loss.
The two teams are set to face off again on Saturday evening, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35pm. RHP Cooper Criswell is anticipated to get the nod for Durham, with Nashville expected to give the nod to LHP Eric Lauer.
Tickets for that game and all remaining 2023 Durham Bulls home games are available, and can be purchased at DurhamBulls.com, or by calling 919.956.BULL.
