Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gladiators used two goals by Kevin Doell to knock off the Columbus Cottonmouths 4-3 in overtime at the Arena at Gwinnett Center Thursday night.
Brandon Dietrich tallied his first goal of the season as he picked up a rebound in the high slot and fired a shot over the shoulder of Columbus net minder Oliver Michaud at the 7:43 mark of the first period. Cam Brown took the shot that created the rebound after he took a pass from Steve Slonina as they both picked up assists on the goal.
Columbus tied the contest up at 1-1 at the 16:29 mark of the first period as Dan Tudin capitalized on a Gladiators defensive miscue in front of the net. Michael Garnett made the original save but couldn't corral Colin Pepperall's rebound.
Columbus took a 2-1 lead at the 4:07 mark of the second period as Dan Tudin added his second goal of the contest on a slap shot from the high slot. Brad Voth and Kenton Smith added the assists on the goal.
John Morlang added a power play goal at the 6:16 mark of the period to give the Cottonmouths a 3-1 lead. Chad Larrive and Ryan Risidore added the assists on the goal.
The Gladiators cut the Columbus lead back to one goal as Kevin Doell pushed a loose puck in the crease off a rebound past Columbus goaltender Oliver Michaud at the 15:14 mark of the second. Mike Vigilante added an assist on the short- handed goal.
Blue Bennefield tied the contest up at 3-3, 2:16 into the third period as he slipped a puck through the legs of Michaud. Cam Brown and Evan Nielsen added the assists on the goal.
Doell found the back of the net again as he tallied the game winner in overtime as he tipped a Troy Milam shot from the point past Michaud at the 3:36 mark of the overtime session. Kris Goodjohn also added an assist on the goal.
The Gladiators travel to Florence to take on the Pride tomorrow night at the Florence Civic Center at 7:35 p.m. and visit Greensboro on Saturday night to battle the Generals at 7:30 p.m.
