Midland, MI - Derek Dietrich had three hits and a pair of game-tying RBI, but the Hot Rods (1-3, 42-32) came up a run short in their series-opener at Great Lakes (1-3, 40-33), losing 4-3 in walk-off fashion on Monday night. The winning run scored on a two-out error by Robi Estrada, capping of a wild ninth inning and sending the Hot Rods to their third straight defeat.
The top of the ninth started the wackiness for the Hot Rods. Kevin Kiermaier began the frame with a double. The next batter, Alejandro Torres laid down a sacrifice bunt, but reached first base when the throw was dropped. The Hot Rods weren't able to take advantage, however, as Luke Bailey popped out, pinch-runner Cody Rogers was picked off, and Hector Guevara popped out to end the inning.
That led to the bottom of the ninth when the first three men reached against Austin Hubbard. With the bases loaded and nobody out, manager Brady Williams brought on an extra infielder to give his team five infielders. The shift worked as Bobby Coyle bounced into a double play for outs one and two. Jon Garcia followed with a routine grounder to third, but Estrada couldn't make the play and the winning run scored to give the Loons the 4-3 triumph.
Austin Hubbard took the loss, giving up an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth inning. He allowed one hit, hit one batter, and gave an intentional walk to load the bases. The final miscue earned the win for Logan Bawcom, who worked his way out of the top of the ninth with two on and no outs.
Besides his two errors, Estrada teamed with Dietrich to provide the bulk of the Hot Rods offense. Estrada tripled, picked up an RBI, and scored a run for his second straight three-hit game. Dietrich tied the game in the fifth and seventh innings with two-out RBI singles, part of a three-hit night for him.
Both starters took no-decisions as C.J. Riefenhauser went five innings and allowed two earned runs with six K's for Bowling Green. Lefty Ryan Christenson allowed one earned run on eight hits in his five innings of work.
The series continues on Tuesday night at 6:05 PM CDT. RHP Wilking Rodriguez returns to the rotation for his first start in a Hot Rods uniform in 2011. He'll face Great Lakes LHP Greg Wilborn, who makes his first start of the season. You can follow the game with Tom Gauthier at 5:40 PM CDT on 1340 WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
