Arbelo Homers Again to Give Hawks Win in 11th

Comstock Park, MI - For the second time in three days, Yazy Arbelo homered to break a 2-2 tie and help the South Bend Silver Hawks to a victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps. Whereas on Saturday it was in the eighth inning, Monday's deciding blow took place in the 11th as the Silver Hawks rallied for a 4-2 win.

In the top of the eleventh, Arbelo delivered against reliever Logan Hoch (LP, 0-1). After falling behind 0-2 on a questionable strike call, Arbelo took a 1-2 pitch over the right-center wall for his 19th home run of the season. The blast put him tied for ninth with Mark Reynolds on the Silver Hawks' single season home run leaderboard.

The game was dominated early by pitching, with Tyler Green (ND) and Kevin Eichhorn (ND) exchanging zeroes on the scoreboard. South Bend's Green went 5.0 scoreless innings, while Eichhorn pitched eight scoreless innings for West Michigan before giving up the lead in the ninth.

West Michigan actually took the lead first, scoring twice on four hits against reliever Patrick Schuster (ND) in the bottom of the seventh. The Whitecaps had four singles in the inning with Jeff Rowland and Luis Sanz picking up RBIs to take a 2-0 lead.

South Bend had just three hits through eight innings, but rallied in the ninth to tie the game. Chris Jarrett had a bunt single and moved to third on Gerson Montilla's single to right-center. After Ender Inciarte walked to load the bases, Mike Freeman had a RBI groundout against Bruce Rondon (BS, 3) to put the Silver Hawks on the board. One out later, Arbelo was intentionally walked to load the bases and Matt Helm was hit by a pitch to force in the tying run.

South Bend missed an opportunity in the tenth inning, getting runners at second and third with no out but failing to score. West Michigan had a chance in the bottom of the tenth, but Rowland was thrown out trying to get back to third after rounding too far to end that threat.

Helm followed Arbelo's 11th inning homer with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a single from Raywilly Gomez, and scored on a Roberto Rodriguez sacrifice fly as a big insurance run. Those runs were enough for Blake Cooper (WP, 1-2), who pitched 3.0 scoreless innings to earn his first win of the year.

The two teams continue the series on Tuesday afternoon at 12:00 PM Eastern Time at Fifth Third Ballpark. LHP David Holmberg (7-3, 2.61 ERA) will start for South Bend against LHP Kyle Ryan (4-5, 3.55 ERA) of West Michigan.
