Kernels rally falls short in 8-5 loss to Beloit

Beloit, WI - The Kernels rallied for three runs in the 9th inning but fell to the Snappers 8-5 at Pohlman Field on Sunday afternoon. Trailing 8-2 going into the 9th inning, the Kernels plated three and even brought the tying run to the plate. Brandon Decker led off the inning with a solo home run to left center. Jean Almanzar singled and later scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by David Harris. Carlos Lugo walked and scored on a RBI single by Jeremy Cruz to make the score 8-5. With runners at the corners and two outs, Ricky Alvarez grounded to 3rd base to end the ballgame.

The Kernels got on the board in the 1st inning with a two-run home run by Cruz, giving Cedar Rapids an early 2-0 lead against Snappers starter Pat Dean. Beloit answered with two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, tying the game 2-2. Adam Bryant reached 2nd base on a fielding error by center fielder Rolando Gomez. Nate Roberts followed with a RBI double, scoring Bryant to cut the Kernels lead to 2-1. Kernels starter P.J. Jang then walked Jairo Perez, and Lance Ray singled to load the bases. Jang hit Tyler Grimes with a breaking ball to send Roberts home, tying the game 2-2.

The Snappers took a 3-2 lead in the 4th inning on a two-out RBI single by Perez, scoring Roberts. Beloit added two more runs in the 5th inning. Lance Ray singled to lead to lead off the inning. Grimes then followed with a single, and Ray scored on a fielding error by Kernels left fielder Justin Bass. Grimes later scored on a RBI groundout by Andrew Leer, extending Beloit's lead to 5-2.

Jang (0-1) took the loss in four innings on the mound, allowing five runs (one earned) on seven hits. He struck out four and walked two. Dean (2-0) started for the Snappers and was the winning pitcher with six innings of work. He allowed two runs on six hits while striking out three and walking one. The Snappers added two more run in the 6th inning, extending their lead to 7-2. With two outs Michael Gonzales and Perez singled. They both came home on a RBI double by Lance Ray.

Manny Correa went two innings in relief for the Kernels, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out one and walking none. Beloit's Tobias Streich smacked a solo home run off of Seth Fowler to lead off the 7th inning, extending the Snappers lead to 8-2. Fowler went two innings and allowed one run on one hit. Ben Tootle went two innings in relief for Beloit. He allowed no runs and no hits while walking one. Blayne Weller went 0.2 inning for the Snappers and allowed three runs on three hits. Clinton Dempster came on to throw the final pitch of the game, picking up his fifth save of the year.

The Kernels now begin a three game road commuter series at Quad Cities. The series is in Davenport with games Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The Kernels return home on June 30, hosting the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at 6:35 p.m. Morgan Hawk brings you the action on the radio home of Kernels baseball, 1450 KMRY AM.
