Witherspoon to DL; Chris Giovinazzo joins Kernels from Tempe

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announce that OF Travis Witherspoon has been placed on the 7-day disabled list with a left oblique strain and that OF Chris Giovinazzo will join the Kernels from the AZL Angels. Abe Flores, Director of Player Development for the LA Angels, announced the moves on Monday.

The Angels selected Giovinazzo in the 39th round of the 2011 First Year Player draft out of UCLA. He was originally drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 21st round of the 2010 draft, but elected to return to UCLA for his senior season. In four seasons with the Bruins, he posted a .255 average with six HR and 51 RBI in 180 college games. He played three games at Tempe, batting .273 (3-11) with a double and two runs scored.

Witherspoon is hitting .232 for the Kernels with six HR and 29 RBI in 69 games. He's currently third in the MWL with 31 stolen bases.

Giovinazzo will join the Kernels in Davenport today and be available for tonight's 7:00 pm game with the Quad Cities River Bandits. With today's transaction, the Kernels roster stands at MWL maximum of 25 active players, with three players currently on the disabled list.

The Kernels begin a three game commuter road series at Quad Cities tonight at 7:00 pm. They return home on Thursday, June 30th and open a six game series over the Fourth of July with games against Wisconsin and Burlington.
