Dewees Collects Four Hits as Rafters Split Double Header

Mequon, WI- The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (26-29, 7-13) and Lakeshore Chinooks (36-19, 15-6) split a double header Friday evening as the Chinooks took the first game of the evening, 7-2, with the Rafters claiming the nightcap, 8-4, at Kapco Park. The double header split was the second time this season the two clubs have split a double dip, with first time occurring on June 8 at Witter Field.

Donnie Dewees led the way for the Rafters in the second game totaling four hits on the evening, including a three-RBI night to lead the way for the Rafters. The four hit performance was Dewees' second of the season.

In game No. 2, Wisconsin Rapids jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the second off Lakeshore starting pitcher, Donnie Hissa, the Rafters used two hits to plate two runs to set the early tone. Zack Belanger reached on a walk and Marcus Wheeler dropped a sacrifice bunt to move Belanger up to second to give the Rafters a runner in scoring position. Charlie Curl followed with the first of two hits by lacing a single to center to plate Belanger to give the Rafters the lead, 1-0. Curl scored the second run of the inning on an RBI single by Dewees to conclude the two-run inning and put the Rafters on top, 2-0.

Lakeshore responded with three unanswered runs through the second and fourth inning, tallying seven base hits off Rafters starter Trevor Koehn, who made his first start of the season and earned the win. The three runs gave the Chinooks the lead, 3-2.

The lead was short lived as the Rafters offense exploded for eight hits over the games final three innings, including three by Dewees.

Dewees led of the big frame in the fifth by reaching on his second base hit of the game, Jackson Slaid followed with a single and Erik Payne loaded the bases with a walk. The first run of the inning would come in the form of a sacrifice fly by Robbie Coman, who replaced Michael Jurgella late in the game. The sacrifice fly tied the game, 3-3. Two more runs would come across to score on singles by Belanger and Wheeler to extend the lead, 5-3.

The Rafters would added two more runs in the sixth inning after a lead off walk by Derek Peake and a single by Dewees to extend to the lead four runs, 7-4.

The Rafters and Chinooks would exchange runs in the sixth and seventh innings as Tyler Willman relieved Koehn and tossed the games final two innings to earn the hold.

The Rafters and Chinooks will concluded a three-game series tomorrow evening at Kapco Park when the Chinooks host the Rafters for a 6:35 p.m. bout. The meeting is final game between the two clubs this season with Lakeshore claiming the season series already. Rafter fans can listen to tomorrow night's ballgame by tuning into 1320 AM WFHR.
