Willmar Stingers News Release
WILLMAR, Minn. - The Rochester Honkers rolled into Bill Taunton Stadium looking much more like the team that finished 18-17 in the first half of the season than the team that has struggled throughout the month of July. The Honkers jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and stifled the Willmar offense after the 4th inning to take game one of the three-game set by a final score of 13-4.
Nick Bates started the game for the Stingers, but manager Matt Hollod only intended to use the right-hander out of St. Louis for two innings. Bates' two innings were enough to earn him the loss, but he did impress at times with four strikeouts in that short span. Sheldon Lee pitched well in relief over the middle innings. Lee (San Francisco) gave the Stingers 3.2 scoreless innings, coming into the game with Rochester out to its early lead.
The Stingers mustered a rally in the home half of the 3rd inning, scoring four runs. The inning began with a leadoff walk to Max Dutto (California) and a Zack Tillery base hit placed a pair of runners on for Marc Flores. Flores (Hawaii) delivered with an RBI base hit through the middle of the infield, extending his league-best RBI total to 49. Tillery then scored on the next play when college teammate from Florida Gulf Coast, Michael Suchy, notched a single. Max Kuhn (Kentucky) joined in on the frenzy with an RBI-walk that improved his season's RBI total to 42. The inning would be the last of the night for Tyler Eppler, who last just 2.1 frames. For his efforts, 2-of-4 with an RBI and a walk, Suchy earns the honors of CDI player of the game.
The Stingers will turn to Andrew Woeck (NC State) to even the series with the Honkers tomorrow evening during ACMC's soft baseball giveaway night to the first 250 kids.
The 2013 season is presented by Charter. For more on your Willmar Stingers please visit the West Central Tribune at www.wctrib.com.
