Alexandria Blue Anchors News Release
Alexandria, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors defeated the St. Cloud Rox 5-2 at Knute Nelson Memorial Park Thursday night. In the second half, the Anchors are 8-11 and 18-35 overall.
Alexandria jumped ahead against Kyle Murray in the bottom of the fourth due to great situational hitting. Andrew Sohn singled into right and went to second on a wild pitch. Then a groundout to second by Albert Baur put Sohn on third for Ryan Blanchard. A sacrifice fly to right field by Blanchard plated Sohn giving the Anchors a 1-0 lead. Then on a 1-0 offering Tim Cusick lined a ball straight out to centerfield for a solo homer extending the Anchors' lead to 2-0.
The Blue Anchors used another longball in the bottom of the fifth. Leading off the inning was Michael Barash and he launched a ball into center pushing Alexandria's lead to 3-0.
St. Cloud was finally able to figure out Tyler Beck in the sixth. After starting the game with five scoreless frames, Beck allowed a base hit to Blake Headley and walked Dustin Breshears. Then a passed ball moved both runners into scoring position and Headley was brought home on a sac fly by Tim Colwell. Then with two outs and Breshears on third, a wild pitch scored the runners and Alexandria's lead was cut to 3-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Anchors got those runs back. Sohn collected his third hit of the game and Albert Baur followed up with a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. On a walk to Blanchard a wild pitch by relief pitcher Bryce Jackson scored Sohn making the score 4-2 in the Blue Anchors favor. Then with Baur on third and Blanchard on first, Cusick grounded into a double play which scored the runner Baur and Alexandria led 5-2.
Beck (2-5) grabbed the win going six innings and giving up just two runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Getting a hold was Brandon Johnson who pitched two scoreless innings allowing just a hit with four punch outs. Closing the door for the Anchors was Jose Cardona who pitched a perfect ninth with one strikeout.
Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Andrew Sohn (SS) - The Western Michigan infielder had a great day at the plate going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Sohn has been one of the most consistent hitters for Alexandria in 2013 and sits fourth in the Northwoods League with a .364 average.
