Thunder Bay Border Cats News Release
The Border Cats battled back from an early 4-0 deficit Friday night, but couldn't hold a 6-5 lead as they lost 11-7 to the Duluth Huskies at frigid Subway Field. The loss dropped the Cats second half record to 4-16 and also gave Duluth the Superior Cup. The Huskies took a 5-4 lead in the series, giving the defending champions the trophy for the third straight year.
Tyler Duplantis (Nicholls State University) put Thunder Bay infront with a grand slam home run in the 4th inning as the Cats scored five times to take their only lead of the night. For Duplantis, it was his eighth homer, tying a single season franchise record set by Dan Soukup in 2003. The Cats first baseman went 4-5 in the loss with a double and two runs scored. Philip Lyons (Nicholls State University) connected for his second home run in as many nights as the second baseman went 2-4. Dylan Becker (Missouri State University) also went deep with a solo shot, his fourth of the season. Trey Vavra hit a three-run home run for Duluth as the Huskies answered with five runs in the top of the 5th inning to grab the lead for good. The Cats got one run back in the bottom of the 9th inning on a RBI single by Kyle Hann (Mississippi State University), but Cory Kay (Missouri State University) struck out with the bases loaded to end the game.
Caleb Smith (Rice University) started the Cats and lasted just two innings. The righthander allowed four runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Steven Pastrana (Dominican College) gave up four runs in 2 1/3 innings as he took the loss in relief to fall to 0-2.
The Cats and Huskies conclude their three-game series tonight at 6:05pm. Chris Kerwood (Arkansas State University) will make his tenth appearance of the season on the mound for Thunder Bay. The righthander is 3-4 with a 6.85 earned run average.
