Lakeshore Chinooks News Release
It wouldn't be Lakeshore Chinooks baseball without yet another extra inning ballgame. A run in the sixth, two runs in the eighth, and three runs in the tenth erased it 3-0 Green Bay lead to give Lakeshore a 6-3, come from behind victory in ten innings from Joannes Stadium Thursday.
You've heard it before, you'll hear it again. "Leadoff walks will kill you!" The old adage proved true again in the bottom of the first when a leadoff walk came around to score to give Green Bay a 1-0 lead.
Starter Joe Greenfield (Eastern Illinois University) struck out six and battled all evening long dancing around three walks plus a pair of errors in five innings of work.
Defense can either win you a ballgame or lose it. Thursday, if possible, it did both. The Bullfrogs put three straight hits together to begin the fifth inning. Bryant Burleson followed with a sacrifice fly that was misplayed by John Norwood (Vanderbilt University) in right field allowing runners to move up to second and third with two outs. Another run came across to score on a passed ball to make it 3-0 Green Bay.
The comeback started in the sixth when Ryan Krill, (Michigan State University) fresh off an All-Star nod, launched his eighth homerun of the season to put Lakeshore on the board.
Prior to the All-Star break, the bullpen had experienced some difficulty. The break may have done wonders for their psyche because both relievers were fantastic after the three-day hiatus.
Gunnar Eastman (UW-Milwaukee) was first out of the pen throwing three solid innings allowing two hits and a walk while fanning three. He bridged the gap nicely until his offense picked him up with a pair of runs in the eighth.
Wouldn't you know it the old adage came true again? This time, a pair of two out walks came around to score thanks in part to an error by the leftfielder Jimmy Cody and a pair of singles by Mike Hollenbeck (Illinois State University) and Sawyer Polen (Kent State University) to tie things at three.
Mitchell Sewald (Louisiana State University) was lights out on the mound in the ninth setting Green Bay down 1-2-3.
Mike Papi (University of Virginia) laced a one-out double to start the rally in the tenth. After hitting a home run earlier in the game, Krill was intentionally walked followed by yet another walk to Hollenbeck loading the bases. Papi came in to score on a passed ball to give Lakeshore its first lead of the ballgame. Polen drew the third consecutive walk loading the bases again, giving Lakeshore a golden opportunity to bust the game open. Eli Roundtree (Missouri Baptist) and Jared Fon (UW-Whitewater) did not miss that opportunity picking up back to back hits to give Lakeshore a three-run advantage.
Sewald came on and slammed the door with a clean tenth inning, finishing it in style with a strikeout.
Lakeshore returns home for a nine-game, eight-day homestand Friday beginning with a double-header against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. The twinbill will consist of two seven-inning ballgames beginning at 4:05. The two teams were rained out on Gill Chinook bobblehead day back on July 21. The second game is scheduled to start at 7:05 or thirty-five minutes after the completion of game one.
