March 2, 2019 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Binghamton Devils News Release
CHARLOTTE - The Charlotte Checkers defeated the Binghamton Devils on Saturday night from Bojangles' Coliseum, 8-1.
Tomas Jurco opened the scoring for Charlotte 3:28 into the game, as he tapped in a Martin Necas' pass on a two-on-one by goaltender Cam Johnson. Necas and Morgan Geekie drew assists for the 1-0 lead.
The Devils tied the game midway through the first period as Brandon Gignac forced a shot through the legs of Checkers goalie Dustin Tokarski. Brett Seney gathered a loose puck behind the net and fed a pass out to an unchecked Gignac in the crease. Gignac fired a quick shot that trickled through the five-hole of Tokarski and drifted just over the goal line. Desmond Bergin was credited with an assist on the play - his first American Hockey League point.
The Checkers regained their lead two minutes later at 11:50 while on the power play. Patrick Brown deflected in a point shot from Trevor Carrick and Charlotte took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
After playing scoreless through the first 15 minutes of the second, Charlotte extended their lead to two at 14:14. Johnson went behind the net to retrieve a dump-in attempt and was met by two Charlotte forecheckers. Andrew Poturalski stole the puck from Johnson and wrapped it into the open cage for a 3-1 lead.
Charlotte added another goal with 3:01 remaining in the period while on a two-man advantage. Jurco scored his second of the game on a one-time shot from the right circle, giving the Checkers a 4-1 lead after 40.
The Checkers put in four more goals in the third period for an 8-1 win.
