March 2, 2019 - American Hockey League (AHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

The Gulls began the month of March and a back-to-back matchup at the Stockton Heat with a 5-2 loss at Stockton Arena.

Chase De Leo scored his 17th goal of the season to push his point streak to three games (1-3=4). He also has 8-7=15 points with a +11 rating his last 12 games. Kiefer Sherwood collected his eighth assist of 2018-19 and third straight game with a point (1-2=3), while Ben Thomson picked up his ninth of the campaign.

Kalle Kossila netted his 11th goal of the season to mark his seventh point in as many games (3-4=7). Adam Cracknell recorded the primary assist to push his point streak to four games (2-4=6) in addition to eight goals and eight assists his last 11 contests. Jack Kopacka also earned an assist on the goal, his ninth point of the season.

Patrick Sieloff made his Gulls debut following his acquisition from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Brian Gibbons on Feb. 24.

Kevin Boyle stopped 38 shots after being reassigned by Anaheim to San Diego earlier in the day. Boyle stopped 21-of-22 first period shots to tie a personal record for most saves in a single period (also Feb. 17, 2018 vs. Ontario).

The Gulls and Heat will conclude the back-to-back matchup tomorrow night, Mar. 2, at Stockton Arena (6 p.m.).

POSTGAME QUOTES

Sam Carrick

On the game

It was on us as players. We need to be better prepared to play a game. It doesn't matter what day of the season it is, these games are huge. I don't think we took this game as seriously as we needed to and it showed. Left (Kevin Boyle) out to dry there for sure, but good news is that it's a quick turnaround. We have another one tomorrow and a little redemption.

On Stockton's penalty kill

We just need to move the puck quicker and execute a little better. I think we kind of sat back a little too much. We were expecting them to give us an easy goal out there and that's not going to happen this time of the year. We need to be better at moving the puck quicker and throwing it on net. That's how we are going to get goals at this point, we need to start taking more pucks to the net.

On the back-to-back vs. Stockton

We don't have a lot of time to dwell on tonight too much. I think guys have already prepared for tomorrow. It starts with getting some rest tonight. With the character we have with this group here, there is no doubt in my mind that we'll come out with a better effort tomorrow and we'll see what happens.

Head Coach Dallas Eakins

On the game

I think it was a number of things. I think they're a very desperate team right now with where they're at in the standings. We talked about that before the game. Behind us, they're I think No. 2 in the league in goals per game. We talked about that, the importance of not giving up odd-man rushes. It was a night we didn't win many battles. I don't care how deep you are, or how good you are, if you're not going to win battles you're not going to win hockey games. They were desperate to win them and we had a lot of poke and home in our game.

On the power play

We're going to look at some different setups. The first one they got shorthanded was a guy wide and not a massive breakdown. We just have to get better control on that power play and quit throwing the puck away when we have it.

On the back-to-back vs. Stockton

I'd rather get right back at it. There's no better way to redeem yourself than not have to live with it long. We'll make the necessary adjustments video wise, meet in the morning and get right back after it.
