March 2, 2019 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Syracuse Crunch News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Crunch gave up the opening goal and chased the Rochester Americans in a 5-3 loss at the War Memorial Arena tonight.
The loss snaps a 12-game home points streak and moves the Crunch to 34-17-3-2 on the season. Syracuse is now 3-3-2-1 in the 12-game season series with Rochester.
Goaltender Eddie Pasquale stopped 37-of-42 in net for the Crunch, while Scott Wedgewood recorded the win with 23 saves. Syracuse converted on 2-of-7 power play opportunities and went a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The Amerks opened scoring when Taylor Leier beat Pasquale on a shorthanded breakaway 3:40 into the first period. C.J. Smith and William Borgen earned the assists.
Rochester doubled their lead just 10 seconds into the middle stanza. Alexander Nylander picked the top left corner from between the circles.
The Crunch stole one back with a power-play goal at the 11:53 mark off some quick tic-tac-toe passing. Taylor Raddysh started the play with a pass down to Ross Colton along the goal line. He quickly redirected it into the slot for Mitchell Stephens to go five-hole.
Just two minutes later, the Amerks regained their two-goal lead. Leier tipped in Lawrence Pilut's left point shot for his second of the game. Zach Redmond tallied a point on the goal.
Syracuse came back within one 9:37 into the final frame. After Wedgewood made the stop on Carter Verhaeghe's right circle shot, Stephens chipped the rebound in top-shelf for his second of the night. The secondary helper went to Alex Barre-Boulet.
Rochester potted back-to-back goals 1:02 apart to build up a 5-2 lead late in the third. At the 15:42 mark, Victor Olofsson netted a shot as he raced down the left-wing boards with the help of Andrew Oglevie and Rasmus Asplund. A minute later, Nylander chased a loose puck into the zone and centered a feed for Smith to finish off and he cut down the slot.
With 1:16 remaining in the game, Colton one-timed a cross-zone feed from Jan Rutta to pull back within two, but it wasn't enough to kick start a late comeback. Cal Foote earned a point on the man-up goal.
The Crunch and Amerks head to Rochester to complete the home-and-home tomorrow at 3:05 p.m.
