BINGHAMTON - Brandon Gignac scored in overtime as the Binghamton Devils defeated the Springfield Thunderbirds on Friday night at home, 4-3.

Springfield forced a turnover and capitalized to take a 1-0 lead in the first period. Jean-Sebastian Dea took the puck from Ryan Murphy and Blaine Byron beat goaltender Evan Cormier on the blocker side. The goal was Byron's 11th of the year with the lone assist to Dea at 12:37 of the opening frame.

Byron struck again to give the Thunderbirds a 2-0 lead 13:44 into the second period. Thomas Schemitsch moved down the left side and fed the puck to the front of the net where Byron slid it under Cormier for his 12th of the season with helpers from Bobby Farnham and Schemitsch.

Binghamton answered back on the power play late in the second period to pull within one. John Quenneville ripped a shot from the left wing circle over the shoulder of goaltender Chris Driedger for his 17th of the year. Quenneville's goal came with 5:11 left in the period with assists from Blake Pietila and Ryan Murphy.

Ryan Schmelzer tied the game 9:31 into the third period off an offensive zone faceoff. After a win at the draw by Pietila, Schmelzer cut to the top of the crease and beat Driedger for his 12th of the season to even the score, 2-2.

Schmelzer helped set up John Ramage's go-ahead goal in the third period. The pass by Schmelzer was out of reach for Ramage, however, he fired a slap shot off the right wing wall and beat Driedger on the blocker side for a 3-2 lead with 8:41 remaining. Quenneville collected the secondary assist on Ramage's 10th goal of the year and third in two games.

With just three minutes remaining, Harry Zolnierczyk tied the game, beating Cormier from the top of the crease with assists from Sebastian Repo and Juho Lammikko. Zolnierczyk's 14th goal of the year eventually forced overtime.

In overtime, the Devils forced a turnover and Brandon Gignac buried the game-winning goal on a give-and-go play with Pietila with 2:11 left in the extra time. Cormier stopped 22 in the victory and Driedger denied 30 in the loss.
