Carolina Mudcats News Release
Chattanooga, TN --- Alfredo Silverio hit a tie-breaking homer in the fifth inning to send the Chattanooga Lookouts to a 5-3 victory over the Carolina Mudcats on Wednesday afternoon to claim the series at AT&T Field.
The Mudcats (18-42) had rallied from two deficits to tie the Lookouts (28-32) before Silverio took out starter Tim Gustafson (L, 0-2) to open the inning. Trailing 2-0 in the second, Mike Costanzo continued his torrid hitting with a two-run shot to right-center. Costanzo has seven hits in his last nine at-bats, including a pair of homers.
After the Lookouts went ahead 3-2 with a third unearned run in the bottom of the third, Felix Perez scored the tying run on an RBI-double by Jose Castro. Castro was 2-4 with two doubles before leaving the game in the top of the eighth inning with an injured left knee.
Gustafson worked five innings, allowing three hits and five runs, but only one was earned. Gustafson fanned three and walked five. The Lookouts loaded the bases in the first inning on walks, but an error by Cosatnzo at third base with two outs allowed two runs to score.
Clayton Shunick worked two scoreless innings in relief of Gustafson, with all-star Brad Boxberger pitching a perfect eighth.
Michael Antonini (W, 4-7) notched the win working six innings, permitting three runs on five hits.
The Lookouts managed just four hits in the game, but claimed their third straight series against the Mudcats. By dropping the final two games of the set, the Mudcats lost their 20th consecutive series dating to late July, 2010.
The Mudcats finished their 10-game road trip 3-7, and return home to host first place Tennessee Thursday night with Pedro Villarreal (2-0, 4.91) starting against Brooks Raley (2-5, 5.10) at 7:15 PM ET.
