Birmingham Barons News Release
Hoover, AL - Greg Paiml delivered the game-winning run for the second game in a row Wednesday afternoon as the Birmingham Barons (34-25) extinguished the Jacksonville Suns (32-28), 4-2, in front of 2,037 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
The Barons took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Brandon Short singled and raced around the bases to score on a two-out double by Josh Phegley.
The Suns captured a 2-1 advantage in the fourth inning when Luke Montz smacked a leadoff single, scampered to third base on a Neil Sellers double and dashed home on Jim Negrych's sacrifice fly. With Tim Torres batting, Barons starter Charlie Leesman uncorked a wild pitch and Sellers sprinted to third base. A throwing error from catcher Josh Phegley allowed Sellers to round third base and scurry home.
Birmingham reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Seth Loman and Alden Carrithers reached base on consecutive singles before being advanced to second and third base on a Kenny Williams, Jr. sacrifice bunt. Paiml then gapped a double to right field to plate Loman and Carrithers and put the Barons in front. Two batters later, Tyler Kuhn singled that drove in Paiml and capped the scoring at 4-2.
Leesman (6-1, 3.68) earned the victory for the Barons after he permitted two runs (one earned) on 5 hits, 5 walks and 3 strikeouts in 6.2 IP. All-star reliever Dan Remenowsky (SV, 7) tossed a perfect ninth inning for his seventh save of the season.
Joseph O'Gara (4-3, 4.15) received the loss after he hurled 7.0 IP while allowing four earned runs on 8 hits, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts.
The Barons return home to battle the Mobile BayBears, Double-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, in a fight for first place in the southern division and a chance to clinch a playoff spot at the midway point of the season. The opener of the five-game series is set for 7:05 p.m. Thursday night at Regions Park. Birmingham will feature left-handed pitcher Hector Santiago (3-0, 2.95) while Mobile answers with southpaw Patrick Corbin (5-2, 4.31).
