MOBILE, Ala. - Paul Goldschmidt drove home four runs while Ryan Wheeler and pitcher Bryan Henry each knocked in three as the BayBears ripped the Huntsville Stars with an 11-6 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Winners in nine of their last 10, the BayBears (35-25) remain a 1/2 game on top of the Birmingham Barons for first place in the South Division with just 10 contests to play in the first half including five against the Barons, starting on Thursday night.
Wade Miley started for the BayBears on Wednesday but only recorded two outs before being ejected by first base umpire Jordan Ferrell. Bryan Henry (4-2) spotted Miley for 4.1 innings as he surrendered two runs on seven hits while punching out four.
Huntsville (29-30) grabbed the lead in the first as Sean Halton cracked an RBI double and scored on a base hit by Anderson De La Rosa. The BayBears quickly tied the game in the bottom of the first as Ollie Linton reached on an error and came home with Goldschmidt's 20th home run of the season off starter Cody Scarpetta (2-3).
Scarpetta allowed eight runs in three-plus innings as he gave up an RBI single in the bottom of the second to Henry, who put the BayBears on top to score Marc Krauss. Henry also drove home a pair in the fourth as part of a five-run frame that included Jake Elmore breaking a 3-3 tie with an RBI double.
Wheeler helped put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth as he drilled a three-run triple down the right field line. Clay Zavada, Bryan Woodall, Mike DeMark and Ryan Cook each worked an inning of relief to close out the Stars.
The BayBears hit the road for a crucial five-game set at Regions Park against the Birmingham Barons, which starts on Thursday night at 7:05. Left-handers Patrick Corbin (5-2) and Hector Santiago (3-0) will start for their respective squads. The BayBears return to Hank Aaron Stadium on Wednesday, June 14 to battle the Montgomery Biscuits at 12:05 p.m., beginning the final series of the first half.
