
Pitching Brilliant as Generals Take Series Over Smokies

KODAK, TENN. (June 8, 2011 - Anthony Vasquez and Steve Delabar combined to shutout the Tennessee Smokies, 1-0 Wednesday at Smokies Park, giving the Generals the series 3-2. The Smokies were shutout for just the second time this season. Jackson, now 4-1 in rubber games of a series and with the victory are just one game back of the Smokies in the division, with 10 games to play in the first half. The Smokies out-hit the Generals 8-3, but were 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. The tables were turned from the night before, when Jackson was blanked 6-0. The three-hit output ties for the lowest this season.
Anthony Vasquez (4-4) allowed eight hits in 7.1 shutout innings. He struck out three and walked none. Vasquez has given up just four earned runs in his last three starts (23.1 innings). Steve Delabar has not surrendered a run since being promoted from High Desert (12.1 innings). Delabar notched his fifth save with a scoreless 1.2 innings.
Kyle Seager was 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Scott Savastano had the Generals only RBI. Junior Lake and Marwin Gonzalez had two hits to lead the Smokies.
The Generals only run came in the fifth. With the bases loaded Scott Savastano lined a sacrifice fly to left scoring Kuo Hui Lo from third base. The Generals took a 1-0 lead. The run was set up by a great sacrifice bunt by Brandon Bantz and hit by Kyle Seager.
The Generals begin a five-game series on Thursday night against the Huntsville Stars at Joe Davis Stadium, with first pitch set for 6:43 PM. All Star righty Erasmo Ramirez (6-2, 3.89) takes the mound for Jackson against RHP Wily Peralta (3-6, 4.99). The Generals are 5-0 against the Stars this season.
