Worcester Red Sox News Release

MOOSIC, P.A. - In a series filled with tight games, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (49-30) delivered two eighth inning runs to sneak past the Worcester Red Sox (45-37) by a score of 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at PNC Field.

The WooSox led 3-2 entering the bottom of eighth inning, when manager Billy McMillon turned to Kaleb Ort out of the bullpen. After a groundout to start the frame, Ort allowed a single and a walk to put two on for Jason Lopez. Just up from Double-A, Lopez doubled to left to tie the game, the first blown save of the season for Ort. Greg Allen was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Ort threw a wild pitch that allowed Christian Perez to sprint home. That was the last run of the game-winning rally, and Gregg Weissert pitched a scoreless ninth for the RailRiders to close the final game of the series.

Entering the sixth, Worcester trailed 2-0 on two swings by SWB's Ryan LaMarre: a solo home run in the third and an RBI single in the fifth. Offensively, the WooSox were without a hit against RailRiders' starter Matt Krook. Jeremy Rivera led off the sixth by giving the road team its second baserunner of the day-he struck out, but sprinted to first when the ball jumped away from the catcher. After another strikeout, Yairo Muñoz grounded a ball to third and reached on a fielder's choice as Rivera was cut down at second.

That brought Delino DeShields to the plate with a man on, and on his third day with Worcester, DeShields jumped on the first pitch and put it over the left field wall to tie the game. The 28-year-old's swing marked his first home run in a WooSox uniform and his new team's first hit of the day.

Though neither starter received a decision, both Krook and Worcester right-hander Kutter Crawford were strong. Krook's lone hit allowed in seven innings was the DeShields homer, and he struck out 11, while Crawford delivered five innings of two run ball with seven strikeouts.

Two innings after the homer, DeShields gave the WooSox the lead. After Muñoz extended his Red Sox Triple-A record hit streak to 30 games, DeShields came to the plate with two on and two outs. He worked a three-ball count then banged a ground-rule double to left, scoring Chad De La Guerra to make it 3-2. SWB's two-run eighth inning gave the home team the lead for good, but Worcester still took four of six games for its second straight series victory.

The WooSox are off Monday and begin a six-game series Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. against the Syracuse Mets at Polar Park. Television coverage is on NESN+, while radio coverage starts live at 6:15 p.m. on 100 FM The Pike and the WooSox Radio Network. Worcester's Connor Seabold (0-2, 4.40) is the scheduled starter.
