Bisons End Season-Long Roadtrip with 9-3 Win

August 8, 2021 - International League (IL)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

After going down 3-0 in the first inning, the Buffalo Bisons scored at least one run in each of the final five innings for nine unanswered to beat the Leigh Valley IronPigs 9-3 in Sunday's series finale from Coca-Cola Park.

The IronPigs went with another bullpen game, similar to Tuesday's game one that held Buffalo's bats to just one run. But the Herd got a do-over in game six and capitalized.

Buffalo got within in a two in the fifth, 3-1. Nash Knight singled home Otto Lopez for his first of three RBI's in the game. Lopez led off the frame with his first triple at the Triple-A level.

The Herd then tied it in the sixth. After Richard Urena hustled to reach on an infield single, Lopez drove him home with a ground out and Knight struck for a double to drive home Cullen Large to tie the game at three.

Lopez got off to a slow start in his first career Triple-A series, hitless in his first two games. But the 22-year-old outfielder found his bearings in games four through six collecting five hits in 12 at-bats.

The seventh offered more of the same. Buffalo took the lead as Cullen Large ground ball double that drove home Tyler White. After an intentional walk of Lopez, Knight hit a sacrifice fly to score Richard Urena. Buffalo ultimately scored three runs and sent eight to the plate in the frame.

Forrest Wall navigated the base paths perfectly in the eighth inning to extend the lead. After a leadoff walk, Wall stole second for his third steal of the game, reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 7-3.

Thomas Hatch's mastery on the mound starting for Buffalo allowed for the opportunity to come back. After allowing three runs in the first inning, the righty guided the Herd through the next five frames allowing no runs and one hit.

Hatch's fastball hovered around 93-96 MPH and paired well with a sinker hitting 79-82 MPH. The righty ultimately finished allowing just four hits and struck out a season-high nine over six innings.

Buffalo (49-32) earned a split of the series with the IronPigs (37-43) by winning three of the final four games. The Herd leads the season series 12-6 with one series remaining against the IronPigs at Sahlen Field.

At long last, the Bisons' next game will be their return to their home at Sahlen Field for the first time since 2019. After Monday's universal off-day the city of Buffalo will welcome home the Herd to take on the Rochester Red Wings on Tuesday.
