Last Time Out: The Memphis Redbirds dropped Saturday night's contest against the Durham Bulls by a score of 11-5. With Durham ahead 1-0 in the top of the fourth, Juan Yepez hit a solo home run to tie the game. It was his second long ball of the series. The Bulls broke the game open with five runs in the fourth and five runs in the sixth. Memphis tried to battle back late but a ninth inning three-run home run from Rayder Ascanio wasn't enough.
Memphis Starter: Connor Thomas will make his 14th appearance and seventh start of the season for the Redbirds today. Thomas appeared in the game on Wednesday out of the bullpen and struck out the side in his one inning of work. Predominantly used as a starter during the beginning of his tenure with the Redbirds, Thomas has pitched out of the bullpen in three consecutive and five of his last six appearances. Outside of a rough outing against Gwinnett on July 30 when he allowed seven earned runs, Thomas has yielded two earned runs or fewer in nine of his last ten outings and one run or fewer in eight of those ten. The 23-year-old Tifton, GA native was the Cardinals' fifth round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft out of Georgia Tech. Earlier this season, he became the third player from the St. Louis 2019 draft class to reach Triple-A, only after Zack Thompson and Aaron Antonini.
Durham Starter: Brent Honeywell Jr. will start today's series finale for Durham. It will be his 23rd appearance and fifth start of the season for the Bulls. Honeywell Jr. started the series opener on Tuesday and took a no-decision, yielding two runs on five hits in four innings. He also started against Memphis on May 6 and pitched two perfect innings. The 26-year-old made his MLB debut with the Rays earlier this season, pitching three times. His debut on April 11 was his first appearance in a game in 1298 days after four separate arm surgeries. Once ranked as high as the No. 11 prospect in all of baseball, Honeywell Jr. was the MVP of the 2017 All-Star Futures Game.
Juan Gone: Juan Yepez has been lighting the world on fire at the plate over his last 15 games. During that stretch, he is 18-56 (.321) with eight home runs, 16 RBI, 12 runs and eight walks. Yepez has two home runs and four RBI in five games in Durham this week.
Big Series for Rayder: Rayder Ascanio has enjoyed hitting at Durham Bulls Athletic Park this week. In three games against the Bulls, Ascanio is 6-11 (.545) with a home run, four RBI, three runs and two doubles. Since the beginning of July, the 25-year-old is 17-48 (.354) with three long balls and nine runs driven in. Ascanio is in the midst of a four-game hitting streak.
Warner on a Run: Austin Warner has put together a dominant stretch since the beginning of July. In 11 appearances, Warner has allowed just two earned runs in 15.1 innings, good for a 1.17 ERA. Warner has 19 strikeouts and a 0.65 WHIP in those 11 outings.
Rounding into Form: Zack Thompson has been lights out over his last three starts. The former first round pick is 2-0 with a 1.03 ERA in 17 innings during that stretch. The 23-year-old has held opponents to a .167 batting average against and posted a 0.88 WHIP dating back to July 23.
One for the Trophy Case: Brandon Dickson helped the United States National Team secure a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Dickson appeared in three games for Team USA and allowed just one run in 3.1 innings.
