Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
CHARLESTON, W.V. -- While Wednesday night's game at Appalachian Power Park was the first in the three-game series to take just nine innings, the Delmarva Shorebirds were left with a sour taste in their mouths after a 7-2 defeat to the West Virginia Power that thwarted their sweep attempt.
West Virginia (30-28) jumped out to an early lead on Shorebirds (32-25) starter Francisco Jimenez and never trailed in the contest. The Power went ahead 2-0 in the first on a Logan Ratledge RBI single and a Carlos Munoz sac fly.
Delmarva managed just four hits on the night, but was able to battle back into the game. Gerrion Grim, who was one night removed from being pressed into service as a relief pitcher, led off the top of the third with a double and scored on a Cedric Mullins groundout. The 'Birds then tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth when Ricardo Andujar scored on a third strike that got away from Power catcher Christian Kelly.
The Power immediately responded in the bottom of the fifth with two more runs off of Jimenez (4-6), who finished the game allowing four earned runs in six innings while striking out six. Delmarva had just one batter reach base over the last four innings, which was a ninth-inning single to extend his hitting streak to five games. The Power added an insurance run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to run away with the decision.
After a red-eye bus trip, the Shorebirds will open a seven-game homestand on Thursday night against the Lakewood BlueClaws at 7:05 p.m. Promotions scheduled include Thirsty Thursday presented by University Village at Salisbury and a black and orange hat giveaway to the first 500 fans presented by Spicer Bros. Construction Inc. Tickets are available at the Arthur W. Perdue Stadium box office or online at theshorebirds.com.
