Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets (29-28) split two games with the Columbia Fireflies (29-29) Tuesday at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
In game one, Phil Bickford, just named an All-Star, took to the mound looking to improve to 3-4 on the season. He ended up going five innings, with five strikeouts, three earned runs allowed, and six hits. Columbia had a 3-0 lead thanks to Patrick Mazeika's sacrifice fly to left field scoring J.C. Rodriguez. Milton Ramos added an RBI single in the inning.
The Fireflies added one in the fifth off Kevin Kaczmarski's RBI triple.
Things got interesting in the 7th inning as Augusta scored all three runs with two outs. Jalen Miller started the rally with a double. Seth Harrison singled on a ground ball to scoring Richard Amion who had walked, and Dillon Dobson's triple tied the game at three.
The game would go extra innings, with Columbia scoring the go-ahead run in the 10th. The GreenJackets started another rally in the final inning, but stranded the potential tying run at third.
In Game 2, Luis Pion made his GreenJackets debut, lasting 3.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out three. Columbia would scratch across a first inning run, but Augusta answered back with three of their own. Dillon Dobson had the big two-run double in the first, but pulled up coming into second and was removed for Kelvin Beltre on the bases.
Columbia took the lead with a 4-run fifth inning but Kelvin Beltre, who made many fine defensive plays at third, hit the solo shot to bring the Jackets within one.
The 7th inning once again proved to be dramatic, as Augusta would load the bases and walk-off to victory thanks to fellow All-Star Matt Winn hitting the game-winning single.
The GreenJackets return back to action Wednesday evening against the Columbia Fireflies for the finale of the series and the 6-game homestand. It's Veteran Appreciation Night, Baseball Bingo, Strikeout Stroke Night and Silver Jackets Night! Gates will open at 6:00pm and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
The potential pitching matchup is Joe Shaw (3-3, 3.76 ERA) vs Cory Taylor (4-1, 1.94 ERA).
The 28th consecutive season of professional baseball in Augusta is underway.
