Delmarva Outlasts Power in 16

(Charleston, WV)- The West Virginia Power fell to the Delmarva Shorebirds 8-4 in 16 innings Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park. South Atlantic League All Stars Tito Polo and Ke'Bryan Hayes each hit solo home runs in the team's second consecutive extra inning loss.

Delmarva opened the scoring with a run in the third on a run scoring double by D.J. Stewart off Power starter J.T. Brubaker. That lead was short lived as Tito Polo cracked his tenth home run of the season in the bottom half of the inning, tying him for South Atlantic League home run lead. Polo, the starting left fielder for the North in the SAL All Star game, has now hit four home runs in his last three home games.

The Power took the lead in the fourth when Ke'Bryan Hayes crushed the first pitch from starter Christian Alvarado over the left field wall for his sixth home run of the year. The 19-year-old was selected earlier in the day as a utility infielder in the for the Northern Division in the SAL All Star game.

Brubaker allowed just the one run through six inning, striking out nine to stay atop the SAL in strikeouts with 77 for the year. The right-hander has surrendered just two runs in 17 innings over his last three starts.

Alvarado gave up two runs and three hits in six innings, with the two runs coming on the two solo home runs.

West Virginia maintained the lead until the seventh. After Ademar Rifaela hit a leadoff double against reliever Tanner Anderson, Ricardo Andujar hit a groundball single to right to tie the game 2-2.

The game remained tied until the tenth when Delmarva pushed across a run. The first two batters reached against Power reliever Cesilio Pimentel on a walk and a hit batter, setting the table for Ryan Mountcastle who hit an opposite field double to plate the go-ahead run.

West Virginia fought back in the bottom half of the inning. Daniel Arribas hit a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice. With the Power down to their final out, John Bormann lined a 1-1 pitch from Ryan Meisginer into center field for a base hit, scoring Arribas and knotting the game at 3-3.

Neither team would score until the sixteenth inning, when Delmarva broke through with five runs. After back-to-back hits to start the inning, Cedric Mullins lined a double to right to give the 'Birds a two run lead. Following an RBI single, the rally was capped by a two run home run by Alex Murphy against Power left fielder Logan Ratledge, who made his third pitching appearance of the year.

The Power got one run back in the bottom half of the inning on a bases loaded balk, however they stranded the bases loaded with the tying run at the plate as Delmarva won 8-4.

Amedee (0-2) took the loss after giving up four runs in three and a third innings of relief. Bobby Strader (1-2) allowed a run in three a third innings out of the bullpen to pick up the win. Gerrion Grim, an outfielder, picked up the save in his first professional pitching appearance.

The two teams have combined to play 29 innings over nine hours and 29 minutes in the first two games of the series.

West Virginia attempts to avoid the sweep in the series finale Wednesday night. Logan Sendelbach starts for the Power against Delmarva starter Francisco Jiminez. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. at Appalachian Power Park.
