Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds continued their run of success at Perdue Stadium, earning a 4-1 win over Kannapolis on Friday night. The Shorebirds (25-21) limited the Intimidators to a single run for the second straight night, taking a 2-0 advantage in the series.
Kannapolis struck first in the second inning, though their lead was short-lived. Trey Michalczewski sliced a double down the left field line that nicked off the glove of Gregory Lorenzo. Omar Narvaez broke open the scoring with an RBI single to right field.
The lead did not last long as Delmarva responded in the bottom of the second. Conor Bierfeldt belted a solo home to left field, his third of the season. The blast tied the game at one run apiece.
The Shorebirds took the lead in the fourth inning and coasted from there. Lorenzo reached on a bunt single to spark the rally. The outfielder then swiped second base and immediately moved up to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Yastrzemski collected his team-best 23rd RBI of the year with a single, and the Shorebirds led 2-1. After another throwing error by Kannapolis, Yastrzemski scored on a RBI groundout from Drew Dosch.
Delmarva tacked on another in the sixth with Gregory Lorenzo at the center of the attack again. Lorenzo roped a line drive to left, and Kale Kiser attempted the diving catch. The ball bounced by Kiser, and the speedy outfielder charged all the way to third base. After the leadoff triple, Lorenzo scored on a double play grounder off the bat of Yastrzemski.
Leading 4-1, the only threat came in the seventh inning. Rennie retired the first two outs, but Kannapolis put runners on second and third. Dylan Rheault came on to successfully strand the inherited runners by getting a groundout to first from Kale Kiser.
Jimmy Yacabonis earned his league-best 11th save of the year with two scoreless innings in relief. Rennie improved to 2-3 with the victory, his second win in his last three starts. Thad Lowry took the loss for Kannapolis, his second in two start for the Intimidators.
The Shorebirds will go for the series win on Saturday evening. Left-hander Luis Gonzalez (0-0, 0.00) will make his second start as a Shorebird, and Kannapolis counters with right-hander Robinson Leyer (2-2, 4.14). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Perdue Stadium.
