Hagerstown Suns News Release
About last series... The Hagerstown Suns (32-13) fell for the fifth time in their last six games when they suffered a 7-1 loss to the Asheville Tourists (26-19) on Thursday night at Municipal Stadium. The loss drops the Suns record to 9-7 when facing the South Atlantic League's Southern Division this season.
It was the long ball that did in the Suns on Thursday, as five of the Tourists seven runs were driven in by a homerun. The first Asheville dinger came in the second inning off the bat of 1B Correlle Prime. It was a solo blast that put the Tourists ahead 1-0.
Then, in the sixth, it was Prime who went yard again, this time connecting on a grand slam homerun over the right-center field wall. The two homeruns for the night give Prime 10 long balls for the season, which matches his teammate Ryan McMahon for the league lead. It was the first time this year that a single player hit multiple homeruns in one game against the Suns.
Asheville collected its other two runs on RBI singles, one by 3B McMahon in the sixth right before Prime's grand slam, and the other by catcher Jose Briceno in the eighth.
The lone Hagerstown run scored with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, when catcher Craig Manuel went yard for his fourth homerun of the season. Manuel was celebrating his 24th birthday on Thursday.
It was starting RHP Antonio Senzatela (5-1) who kept the Suns to one run in 8.2 innings to get the win for Asheville. Senzatela allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out two. Starting LHP Hector Silvestre (1-1) suffered the loss for Hagerstown. He went six innings, giving up six earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out one.
On the Mound... RHP Austin Voth will be heading to the hill tonight for the Suns. He is making his ninth start and appearance this season. He last pitched on May 18 at Lexington, going six innings and giving up one earned run on four hits and two walks while striking out four. Voth has gone six innings in each of his last three starts, and over that span he has given up just one run on 10 hits. At home this year he is 0-2 with a 2.19 ERA in five appearances. Overall this season he has tossed 39.2 innings, allowing 13 runs (eight earned) on 30 hits while walking 14 and striking out 44. Tonight he goes up against RHP Alex Balog for Asheville. Balog is making his ninth start and appearance this season as well. He last threw on May 17 at home against Greenville, lasting 5.1 innings and giving up three earned runs on six hits including one homer. He walked one in the outing and struck out four. Balog has gone at least 5.1 innings in each of his eight starts this season, and has twice thrown seven innings. On the road this year he is 2-1 with a 1.78 ERA in four games. Overall this season he has tossed 48.0 innings, allowing 24 runs (18 earned) on 47 hits including four homers. He has walked 12 and has struck out 31.
Touting the Tourists... The Suns and Tourists are playing the second of seven games against each other this season and the second of four that will take place in Hagerstown.
The Suns were 4-3 against Asheville last year. The Tourists are currently 26-19 overall, good for second place in the Southern Division standings. Asheville is currently first in team batting with a .285 average and 10th in pitching with a team ERA of 4.34.
