Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
CHARLESTON, WV - Lakewood's 14 hits and Dylan Cozens' two home runs were not enough to bring the BlueClaws back from an early hole as West Virginia topped Lakewood 8-6 on Friday night from Appalachian Power Park.
The BlueClaws (18-27), who had won five of their previous six, fell behind in the second inning and while they brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the 8th inning, were never able to get closer than two.
The Power took the lead on a two-out RBI single by Elvis Escobar in the second inning. After the BlueClaws got a run in the third, a SAC fly by Edwin Espinal made it 3-1 in the third inning.
In the fourth, Escobar, who drove in four, added an RBI double with two outs off Lakewood starter Alejandro Arteaga, and three more Power hits would end Arteaga's night. Arteaga, who fell to 3-6, allowed 11 hits and six runs over 3.2 innings pitched.
Jesen Therren allowed two runs in three innings as the Power built their lead to 8-3.
Lakewood got back in the game in the eighth, when Dylan Cozens homered and Mitch Walding scored on an error by second baseman Erich Weiss. West Virginia, however, turned to Brett McKinney, who got the last two outs of the eighth inning with the bases loaded to preserve the three-run lead.
Cozens added another home run in the ninth - his 6th and 7th of the season and the first two home run game of his career. Samuel Hiciano homered for Lakewood earlier in the game, his 5th of the season and second in as many games.
Carlos Tocci, JP Crawford, and Wilmer Oberto had two hits apiece while Hiciano had three.
The series continues on Saturday night at 7:05 pm. RHP Drew Anderson (2-3, 4.10) opposes RHP Dovydas Neverauskas (3-1, 4.25).
