Asheville Tourists News Release
Hagerstown, MD-- All the Hagerstown Suns needed was a little bit of life on Friday night and a few crucial defensive miscues by the Tourists provided just that. Asheville surrendered a four-run lead and saw their chances at a victory slip away in the bottom of the ninth.
The Tourists jumped on the Suns early with a four-run first inning. With runners at the corners Ryan McMahon doubled in David Dahl to make it 1-0. The next batter, Correlle Prime, doubled down the first base line and plated two more. Later in the inning, Jose Briceno connected with an RBI double to cap the rally.
In the bottom of the second, Hagerstown used a Tourists error to score one. In the third, it was the same story except the Suns scored twice on two critical mistakes by Shortstop Emerson Jimenez. With the lead cut to just one, the home team used three straight two out base hits in the fourth to tie the game 4-4.
The score remained tied until Asheville was able to push across a run in the seventh. Dahl led off with a triple and scored on a double by Raimel Tapia. The Tourists had a golden opportunity to add some insurance in the eighth when they put runners at first and second with nobody out. After a failed sacrifice bunt attempt and a botched hit and run by Jimenez, Asheville came up empty handed.
Heading to the bottom of the ninth Dylan Stamey was called upon in a one run game to try and close it out. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Wilmer Difo led off with a single and immediately came home to score on Drew Ward's RBI double to right. The relay throw back to the infield missed the cutoff man and Difo avoided a play at the plate. After John Wooten singled, Stamey came back to strikeout Spencer Kieboom; but Jimmy Yezzo's RBI single brought home the winning run.
Briceno and Max White finished with two hits each while Alex Balog did not factor in the decision even though he pitched brilliantly. The Tourists will attempt to rebound on Saturday night against the Suns with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
