Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
SALISBURY, Md. (May 23, 2014) - For the second straight game, the Kannapolis Intimidators mustered just one run in an eventual 4-1 loss to the Delmarva Shorebirds on Friday at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Kannapolis (21-25) has now lost four straight while the Shorebirds improved to 25-21, moving four games over .500 for the first time this season.
Luc Rennie matched a career-high with seven strike outs over 6 and 2/3 innings, allowing a run on seven hits to secure the win. Rennie (2-3) turned things over to Dylan Rheault and Jimmy Yacabonis for the final 2 and 1/3 innings. Yacabonis spun 2.0 shut out innings to run his scoreless innings streak to 17.0 to open the season while collecting his South Atlantic League-leading 11th save.
Thad Lowry (0-2) took the loss in his second start for Kannapolis. He allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits over 4.0 innings. Andrew Mitchell worked 3.0 relief innings, allowing a run, and Jordan Guerrero worked a scoreless eighth inning.
The Shorebirds broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth. Gregory Lorenzo led off the inning with a base hit, stolen second base and moved to third on an errant throw by Intimidators catcher Omar Narvaez. Mike Yastrzemski drove him in with go-ahead single, and Yastrzemski later scored on a Drew Dosch groundout for a 3-1 lead.
Gregory Lorezno helped Delmarva notch an insurance run in the sixth by leading off with a triple and later scoring when Yastrzemski grounded into a double play.
Conor Bierfeldt tied the game, 1-1, in the home half of the second inning with a home run (3) off Lowry.
Kannapolis scored the game's first run in the second inning when Trey Michalczewski led off the inning with a double, and two batters later Narvaez singled to drive him in. Michalczewski went 2-for-4, upping his average to .280 on the season.
The Intimidators and Shorebirds play Game 3 of this 4-game series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Kannapolis will follow this series with a 3-game set at Hickory from May 26-28. The team returns to Kannapolis on Thursday, May 29, for a 4-game series against the first place Hagerstown Suns.
