Game #46
RH Thaddius Lowry (0-1, 1.80) vs. RHP Luc Rennie (1-3, 6.37)
Today's Preview: The Intimidators (A, White Sox) try to snap a 3-game skid when they take on the Shorebirds (A, Orioles) in Game 2 of a 3-game series. Thaddius Lowry, the White Sox fifth round pick in the June 2013 draft, makes his second start for Kannapolis after joining the team last week from Extended Spring. The Shorebirds have won three straight games against the Intimidators, including a pair of games at CMC-NorthEast Stadium last week.
Intimidating Starter: Thaddius Lowry, 19, makes his second start for Kannapolis after taking a loss in his season debut on May 17 against Hickory, allowing a run on three hits over 5.0 innings. He made his professional debut last summer in the Advanced Rookie Appalachian League with Bristol, going 3-5 with a 5.48 ERA in 15 games (seven starts). Lowry began last season in the Bristol bullpen, going 1-2 with a 6.35 ERA in eight relief appearance before moving into the rotation and going 2-3 with a 5.18 ERA in seven starts. His last outing of 2013 was perhaps his best as he worked a career-high 6.0 scoreless IP in a win on Aug. 27 against Burlington. He struck out a career-high five in a relief appearance on July 9 against Danville. The Sox selected Lowry out of Spring (Texas) High School.
Dealing for Delmarva: Luc Rennie, 20, makes his seventh start of the season and second straight against Kannapolis. In four career starts against the Intimidators, he is 2-1 with a 3.66 ERA (8 ER/19.2 IP) with 18 strikeouts and six walks. Prior to his start against Kannapolis on May 16 (a no decision in which he allowed two runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings), Rennie earned his first win of the year in a 6.0-inning outing against Lakewood in which he allowed one run on five hits. The Orioles drafted him in the 16th round of the June 2012 draft out of Torrey Pines High School in San Diego, Calif.
Last Time Out: Delmarva's starter Sebastian Vader spun 7.0 strong innings on the way to his fifth consecutive win as the Shorebirds topped the Kannapolis Intimidators, 5-1, on Thursday at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Delmarva scored four runs in the first inning to run away with the game early. Vader (6-1) limited Kannapolis to a run on five hits while walking one and striking out four for his second straight victory over the Intimidators (21-24). His six wins are now tied for second-most in the South Atlantic League. For the second straight game, Kannapolis fell victim to a big first inning. Delmarva (24-21) jumped on starting pitcher James Dykstra as the first four batters all reached base safely and scored. Mike Yastrzemski drew a leadoff walk and stole second before Jeff Kemp singled him home. Drew Dosch followed with an RBI-triple, and Trey Mancini's base hit plated Dosch for a 3-0 lead. Mancini later scored on a groundout. Dykstra (2-5) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits over 5.0 innings. He struck out two and walked one. Andre Wheeler spun the final 3.0 innings for Kannapolis, striking out five batters while not allowing a run.
Broadcast: Today's game can be heard via the Delmarva Shorebirds website: delmarvashorebirds.com. Intimidators team broadcasts will resume when the team returns to North Carolina next week for a 3-game series at the Hickory Crawdads.
