COMING UP: The Cincinnati Cyclones (21-14-1-2) play a pair of road games this week, looking to extend their lead in the North Division of the American Conference of the ECHL. The Cyclones hold a four point edge over both Trenton and Reading for the top spot in the division. Cincinnati is at Wheeling Friday (Jan. 26) and at Dayton Saturday (Jan. 27).
DESJARDINS PLAYS IN ALL-STAR GAME: Cincinnati Cyclones goaltender Cedrick Desjardins was the winning goaltender for the American Conference in the annual ECHL All-Star Game at Boise, ID on Wednesday night (Jan. 17). Desjardins played the second period and entered the contest with the score tied at 1-1. Cedrick stopped all nine shots he faced in the frame and left the game after the middle frame, with the Americans leading, 4-1. The game would wind up a 6-3 triumph for the American Conference over the National Conference.
DESJARDINS NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cyclones goaltender Cedrick Desjardins was named the Rbk Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week for Jan. 8-14. That week, Desjardins went 3-1-0 to help the Cyclones enter the All-Star break in first place in the North Division. Cedrick allowed only one goal in each of his three wins, lowering his goals-against average to 2.32 which is second in the ECHL. He leads the ECHL with four shutouts and is 16-9-0 with a save percentage of .922.
THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Cyclones played just one game last week, a 4-0 loss at Toledo on Friday night (Jan. 19). The win was the first of three on the weekend for the Storm, who moved from last place into fifth place with the trio of triumphs.
ROAD WARRIORS: The Cyclones are currently three games into a five-game road swing. Cincinnati is 2-1 thus far on the trip. It will be 18 days (Jan. 31 vs. Reading) from the start of the trip until the Cyclones play a game at home. The Cyclones are now 8-8-1 (.500 winning percentage) away from U.S. Bank Arena.
PREVIEWING THIS WEEK: The Wheeling Nailers (16-18-1-1) host the Cyclones on Friday (Jan. 26) at WesBanco Arena. Wheeling has claimed three wins from Cincinnati in six tries this season, including a pair at U.S. Bank Arena. Friday night will be the seventh of eleven meetings between the teams and the second of five in West Virginia. The Dayton Bombers (18-11-0-4) welcome the Cyclones to the Nutter Center on Saturday (Jan. 27) for a 7pm tilt. Cincinnati has a 5-2-1 record against the Bombers this season. The game Saturday will be the fourth of six between the teams played in Dayton.
NATURAL BORN KILLERS: The Cyclones lead the ECHL in penalty killing at 88.6 percent. Cincinnati has killed off 64 of the last 67 shorthanded situations (95.5 percent) since Dec. 28. After surrendering a pair of power play goals into he first six minutes of the game at Dayton on Dec. 28, the squad went 336 minutes, 13 seconds without surrendering a power play goal.
UNPACK THE BAGS, WE'RE GOING TO BE HERE A WHILE...: The Cyclones begin the week as the leaders of the North Division. Cincinnati moved into a share of the top spot on Dec. 23 and has not been moved from first place since (that's 30 days in a row for those of you following along).
SEVEN OVER: The Cyclones have an 21-14-3 record, seven games above .500. The last time Cincinnati was as many games over the break even point was March 5, 2003--when the club was 29-21-6. That team would finish seven games over .500 (36-29-7) and would lose in the seventh game of the American Conference finals to Atlantic City--which would capture the Kelly Cup. The last time the club was nine games above .500 was Feb. 26, 2003, following a 6-5 shootout win over Louisiana, to put the club at 28-19-6. The last time the club was ten or more games ahead of break even? The close of the expansion season of the club (1995-96), when the team finished the year at 39-24-7 (15 games ahead).
IN THE COMMUNITY: Tomorrow (Tuesday, Jan. 23) -- several players will be at Clermont-Northeastern Elementary helping preview the Education In Hockey Day game on March 27. Last Monday (Jan. 15), Jason Deitsch and Sam Ftorek went to the Fun Factory with members of the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative. Last Wednesday (Jan. 17), Barret Ehgoetz and Jarred Mohr were at Taft Elementary, helping to educate students in the game of hockey in preparation of their visit for the 'Education In Hockey Day' event on Tuesday, March 27.
BEST OF TIMES, WORST OF TIMES: Since the Cyclones lost a season-worst five consecutive games from Nov. 4-16, the club has bounced back with a 17-7-3 record over the next 26 games (.685 winning percentage).
QUICK HITS: Cedrick Desjardins leads the ECHL in shutouts with four...The Cyclones have yielded just three shorthanded goals this season--fewest in the ECHL...Cincinnati is 9-7-3 in one-goal decisions.
