KALAMAZOO, Michigan - The Kalamazoo Wings used a power play goal, a shorthanded goal and strong goaltending to parlay a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday night. Former Cincinnati goaltender Ryan Nie turned aside 30 shots in his first appearance against the team he played for a year ago.

Kalamazoo raced to a 2-0 lead at the first intermission. Defenseman Jeff Mason netted his second goal of the year at 3:26 off the left half wall. Mathieu Curadieu and Andrew Forunier had the assists. The lead extended to 2-0 when defenseman Ryan McGinnis tallied his first lamplighter of the year at 12:04 from Mason and Rick Cleaver. Cincinnati spent more than a quarter of the period on the power play but was unable to convert any of the three power play chances. The Cyclones outshot Kalamazoo, 12-10, in the first frame.

The K-Wings extended their lead when Trent Daavettila netted his eight goal of the season at 4:08, a shorthanded effort. The fourth-leading rookie scorer in the ECHL netted his score from Tom Morrow. Kalamazoo now leads the league with 24 second period goals. The shots on goal favored Cincinnati, 13-8, in the frame.

Cincinnati's valiant effort in the third period came up short, as the club scored twice but could not overcome the three goal deficit. Matt Pierce tallied his ninth goal of the season to lead ECHL rookies at 6:02. The five-on-three power play marker came from Dustin Sproat and Jason Jozsa. A four-on-four goal from rookie Kevin Roeder at 14:14 pulled the club to within one, as Brock Sheahan and Scott Reynolds pocketed the helpers. The shots favored the K-Wings, 8-7, in the third-but Cincinnati won the shots battle, 32-26.

Cincinnati finished one for eight on the power play, while Kalamazoo was one for five with the extra attacker. Ryan Nie picked up the win for the K-Wings, stopping 30 shots to run his record to 4-0-1 on the season. Jeremy Smith absorbed the loss, turning aside 23 shots as his record dips to 3-4-1 on the campaign.

Cincinnati is now 5-5-1 on the year-in third place in the North Division, while Kalamazoo leads the North Division at 10-1-1.
